A fantastic return to rugby

Your correspondent is on holiday in Cumbria with limited access to bandwidth and so will briefly report that the Return to Rugby Lunch on Friday featuring Simon Shaw and Bill Sweeney, CEO of the RFU was a fabulous success - they spoke eloquently and opened the Shed with aplomb.

The next day we fielded three men's teams and the Falcons.  The 1st XV put on a gutsy display against Cobham with victory inches away in the dying seconds as we pounded their line but 9-14 the final score. The challenge continues with an away game at Camberley next Saturday.

The seconds came second to a resurgent Alton 1st XV while the 3rds won at new neighbours Hook and Odiham RFC.  The Falcons introduced a number of girls to a full contact 15-a-side rugby in their hard fought game against Barnes.

On Sunday, Monkton Lane was literally rammed with young people enjoying our great game while the Academy played a tournament away.

At Friday's lunch the club presented a portrait of our Chairman, Geoff Robins to be hung in the club to celebrate his 25 years service in the role (its actually 26 now - but COVID delayed things). The presentation was accompanied by accolades from President Geoff Bond and our superstar alumni Jonny Wilkinson by video link.
That we had the weekend we did and can look forward to a great season and a bright future is down to Geoff Robins' leadership, tact, determination and tireless work.  The portrait  - brilliantly executed by Leni Whitford - is but a small token of the immense gratitude we all owe.
