Street Safety in Toronto
On August 20th, 18-year-old Miguel Joshua Escanan lost his life at Avenue Road and Bloor Street when he was struck by a cement truck passing him in the curb lane. This death is a direct result of a lack of action to create protected bike lanes on major roads, and to regulate and ensure safer trucks on city streets.

The Federation of North Toronto Residents’ Associations, on behalf of a number of named organizations, submitted a letter to the leaders of the major Federal political parties, requesting that they urgently make safe active transportation a key priority in each of their Election platforms, including:
  1. Funding – require safe and easy access for active transportation with all infrastructure funding
  2. Zero-emission vehicle incentive – include cycling in zero-emission vehicle incentive programs
  3. Active transportation commuting incentive – create incentives for commuters who use active transportation
  4. Safer trucks – develop safety standards for trucks and mandate safer trucks on Canada’s roads.
CaféTO Survey
CaféTO is supporting nearly 1,200 restaurants this season with expanded outdoor dining space in curb lanes and on sidewalks. A new survey has been launched, which will help the City to better support recovery of the restaurant industry, enhance understanding of the appropriate use of public sidewalks and curb lanes, and identify the effects of expanded patios on private properties. The survey is currently live and will be open until September 19, 2021. You can find the survey at toronto.ca/CafeTO.

All local restaurant operators, CaféTO diners and members of the public are encouraged to complete the survey to help us shape the City's outdoor dining programs and the future of Toronto's streets. The results of the survey will be used to guide the future of CaféTO and outdoor dining.

Multi-Tenant (Rooming) Houses

The City is proposing the creation of city-wide zoning and enhancements to licensing and enforcement of Multi-Tenant (Rooming) Houses (MTHs) to encourage and regulate safe, liveable, well-maintained and affordable housing across the city (adding all of York and Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York, Leaside and East York).

A proposal and proposed by-law changes were reviewed at the City Council meeting on July 15th. Numerous communications were received from individuals, residents organizations, university-associated organizations and other social/tenant associations.  Over 50 speakers were heard!  Councillors then provided their comments and it became obvious that a number of the Wards did not accept the recommendations and the proposed zoning amendments. Mayor Tory spoke indicating that there were insufficient votes to pass the motions. Mayor Tory then put a Motion forward to DEFER the discussion to the Oct 1/4 meeting of City Council to give time for additional discussions. We hope to be advised shortly whether amendments will be made to this proposal.

Ontario Place Redevelopment
The News Release on August 30, 2021 on the Ontario Place Development advised that the province is launching the next phase of engagement, which will include both an online survey and virtual public information sessions. Ontarians will have the opportunity to share their views on how they would like to experience a redeveloped Ontario Place.

“Ontario Place holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Ontarians for the many family-friendly events and activities that have been enjoyed by millions over the past 50 years,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. “That’s why our government is launching a provincewide digital engagement process – we want to hear how Ontarians see themselves using a redeveloped Ontario Place and what features are important to them.”

The public survey is available online through Ontario.ca/OntarioPlace, along with information about the Ontario Place site and the redevelopment process, including the three successful participants. The survey will be open for nine weeks, closing in late October.

In addition to the survey, there will be two provincewide virtual public information sessions on October 13 and 27, which will provide additional opportunities for the public to learn about the planned redevelopment and provide input. More information about the virtual sessions, including how to pre-register, is available on the website.
