Welcome to the IWP Newsletter
October 2021

Dear IWP Ladies -

It's October! For those of you who celebrate it - Happy Hallowe'en

Everything you need to know about registering for activities can either be found in this Newsletter - or on our website www.iwpportugal.org

Space is often limited and some activities may have waiting lists. Please don't be a 'no show' at the last minute! If you sign up - show up - or let us know - even late in the day. Thank you for being considerate of others.

Besides the usual Book Clubs, Coffee Mornings, Paredão, Sintra Walks, Sintra Hikes, Golf, Bridge, Photo Club etc. I want to give a special shout out to the Knitting Group who meet with the Arraiolos Rug Making Group twice a month in Estoril. Do you knit? Crochet? Needlepoint? Cross stitch? Want to learn to make a rug? Yes - I said RUG! Check the website for dates and details.

As more activities are able to be held, volunteers are needed to lead them. Don't be shy about coming forward. You don't have to commit to a recurring activity, just offer to be a helper and we'll find something for you to do for sure! Speaking of helping - please read a note below about an area where volunteers are needed and you do NOT need to speak Portuguese in order to help!

From our member Sarah Hassler:  "Is anyone interested in informal singing? I am a retired music teacher with many years of developing the singing voice and choral conducting. Please email me at shasslermusic@gmail.com.  I will send you a Google form to survey the interest.  OR you can fill out the survey at this link. The survey will only take about five minutes to answer. Thank you!"

WRVS has been a registered Associaçāo in Portugal since 1939.
We encourage and enable people to volunteer and share their time to meet the needs of the community by Caring, Supporting, Fundraising and Community Events.
One of our activities is ‘Preloved Chic by WRVS’. Labels for Less (L4L) the forerunner of Preloved Chic started on a small scale over 11yrs ago in a member’s home, it evolved and expanded over the years due to the creativity of the L4L team and support from the Freguesia of Cascais and Estoril providing larger venues. When the pandemic halted our regular biannual events, we again turned to the Freguesia who offered a storage space.  The storage space was used with great ingenuity to allow members to continue shopping, due to the remarkable success we now have a new permanent home with a new look that is open to everyone.
Address: Espaço Sénior Pampilheira, Rua Eça de Queiroz, 2750-662, Cascais
Opening Times: Tuesday 11.00 – 13.00 Friday 11.00 – 13.00.
  • WRVS supports 18 local charities on a regular basis.
  • L4L raised €22,000 over the last 12mths to alleviate food poverty in the community.
  • 100% of money raised at fundraising events is donated to charity.

Tea and Talk - by Sarah Hockman Hassler

Magical India--Where the Ancient World Coexists with the Modern World.

"I had the privilege of teaching at the American International School Chennai in South India. I retired from my job teaching music in the US to experience a life of teaching in a completely new environment. There I met and worked with some extraordinary people.  I was especially moved by the strong women I met.

At the next Tea and Talk, I would like to share a few of my favorite moments meeting new people in India. I will share some pictures and share some textiles that I brought with me to Portugal."

Volunteer with Riding for the Disabled

This note came in to us ...email Kathryn directly if you have an interest or questions.

Covid 19 was a considerable setback for Riding for the disabled and we have lost a number of our volunteers for a variety of reasons.
We are due to start after the summers holidays on Monday 4th October and expect that most of our riders will resume their riding sessions with us.
We are therefore looking for new volunteers and hopefully, you can help us in that respect. Apart from volunteers working in the riding school and assisting the children, we are looking for someone to help with the admin. particularly receiving payments and writing receipts.
Could you please spread the news and I  look forward to hearing from you
