Halton Medical Officer of Health issues new Letter of Instructions to businesses, organizations
Halton’s Medical Officer of Health today issued a new Letter of Instructions to businesses and organizations today. To take effect this Friday, Sept. 10, these instructions will amend and replace previous instructions for workplaces and rescind previous instructions for malls and retail.
Additionally, Dr. Meghani has updated the Sec. 22 Class Order to reflect new provincial directions for case and contact management of COVID-19.
“We are facing a critical time in Halton Region and in Ontario,” Dr. Meghani stated in correspondence with Halton Regional Council. She says the rapid and continuing spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, which is more easily transmissible and can result in more serious illness, means that we must all do what we can to protect our community and our health system capacity.
The amended Instructions are meant to support businesses and organizations in their efforts to maintain a safe work environment to protect staff, customers and patrons and ultimately the broader community by preventing the spread of COVID-19 in Halton workplaces.
The Instructions:
- Outline the public health measures workplaces must take to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and also provide guidance to workplaces on what to do if one or more of their workers is identified to have COVID-19 presenting the potential for an outbreak.
- Update requirements for businesses and organizations with 100 or more workers physically present at the workplace, including those working in the community.
- Provide new contact tracing measures in certain settings, including the collection and maintenance of customer/patron contact information for places where there is a higher risk of COVID-19 exposure through closer contact or lack of masking.
Updates to the Class Order reflecting recent provincial directions for case and contact management, including:
- Providing updated guidance for how long people must self-isolate based on their symptoms;
- Reducing the length of time people with high-risk exposures must self-isolate from 14 to 10 days; and
- Relieving people with high-risk exposures who are vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 infections of the requirement to self-isolate, at the discretion of Halton Region Public Health.

Today, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, issued the following statement as students head back to class:
“I am proud of all Ontario students heading back to class, be it in-person or online. In keeping with the expert advice of Ontario’s pediatric hospitals and the Chief Medical Officer of Health, we have invested heavily in ventilation improvements to support safer schools. We have deployed standalone HEPA units into every kindergarten class, into every learning space without mechanical ventilation, and some school boards have gone even further by placing HEPA units in every classroom.
Our cautious plan is designed to minimize disruption and maximize safety — with a focus on ventilation improvements — so that your children can continue learning through the year.
While Ontario’s plan is cautious to protect students and staff, it also prioritizes learning recovery in reading and math. New supports for students from our youngest learners to those who will graduate this school year will help unlock their potential and bridge the gaps that arose last year.
To Ontario’s intelligent and kind student community, please continue to remain vigilant as we navigate this pandemic and know that your families, educators and government are proud of you.”

Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, issued the following statement to mark Labour Day:
“This Labour Day, we salute the hardworking men and women who have kept our communities strong and who make Ontario great.
From those who cared for our most vulnerable, kept our lights on and put food on our tables to those maintaining the roads we travel on, building the roofs over our heads and so much more – families in every city and town thank you for your dedication, sacrifice and courage. We should all take pride in what we saw this past year, true examples of business and labour working together in the Ontario spirit.
As we look ahead, we can remain confident knowing that our efforts have paved the way for a better future for workers and their families.
Everyday, our government is committed to protecting workers and standing up for good jobs. There are hundreds of thousands of bigger paycheques waiting to be collected and we’re giving people the hand up they need to get them.
Together, we are on a mission to spread opportunity more widely and fairly. The way we work has changed but, by taking the right steps now, we can all bounce back stronger than ever before.
While the past eighteen months have been different in many ways, one thing remains the same – our unwavering gratitude for the workers in this province and our pride in how they have dealt with the unexpected challenges that have come their way. We will continue to have your back and do everything to ensure Ontario remains the best place to live, have a meaningful career and raise a family. Thank you.”

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:
“Today marks 1,000 days since Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arbitrarily detained in China.
“Both men are being arbitrarily detained. We strongly condemn the lack of a transparent legal process.
“Years have been cruelly stolen from both men and their families. Despite this, they have shown integrity and courage throughout this terrible ordeal.
“We are inspired by their resilience as we continue to work tirelessly with our allies and international partners to do everything we can to bring them home.
“Canada is grateful to all who have joined in expressing their solidary for Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor, including the two dozen countries that sent diplomats to the court proceedings and solidarity events.
“Arbitrarily detaining foreign citizens is unjust and immoral. Sixty-six countries endorsed the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations earlier this year and call for an end to this practice and for the release of all individuals detained for diplomatic leverage.
“This must stop. Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor must come home. The thoughts of all Canadians and Canada’s partners around the world are with Mr. Kovrig, Mr. Spavor and their families as they mark this difficult date.”
