Nella Mae's Farm

Fresh, naturally-grown produce from our family farm in Cove, Oregon

Weekly Update

Hello friends,

I had a great (No) Labor Day. I hope you all did too. Thanks for all the well wishes. I even saw one of my customers (a huge fan of Green Zebra tomatoes) on the Main Eagle trail on our way up to Culver Lake.

I'm so excited to talk about fall gardening this Wednesday! Join me for a conversation about compost, fall planting, prepping beds for winter, and more. The class will be useful for vegetable, flower, and native plant gardens. Read on for more info.

I am planning more online upcoming classes because I bought 16 new gardening/homesteading/climate change books during the summer sale at Chelsea Green Publishing. I am especially excited about the books that focus on desert gardening and growing in hotter, drier times. I could use some help with that after this year.

Your last chance to sign up for beef is this Friday, Sept 10th.

Pre-order your tomatoes or basil for pick up at the farmstand or the La Grande Farmers Market (2pm Tues or between 9-noon Sat.) Best to call or text 541-910-4098.

We still have pickling beets at the farmstand in the white fridge. 14 lbs, $36.

Time to order basil for pesto!
If you want to stock your freezer with pesto this year, it is time to order your big bags o' basil. Please call, text or email me your order. Basil is $10/lb or 3 lbs for $27. I recommend 2-3 lbs for your annual supply of pesto. Check out this recipe or give me a call and we can chat. (Tip: all you really need is olive oil and basil to make pesto...)

Please order for pick up at the farmstand or Saturday farmers market. 541-910-4098 or farmer@nellamaesfarm.com.

Upcoming Class: The Fall Garden

At this point in the summer, you are probably reflecting on what went well and what failed in the garden. You may be tired, but this time of year is perhaps the most important for setting up your best garden for next year.

Join me to learn about compost, cover crops, how to build and protect your soil over the winter, and what you can overwinter for winter and spring harvest.

This class will help with vegetable, flower, and native plant gardens.

Wednesday, September 8th, 6:30-7:30pm on Zoom.

Open to all. If you can afford it, I ask for an $8 class fee on the honor system. If this is a hardship for you, don't worry about it--just join us.

Payment options:
  • CashApp or Venmo to my phone number 5419104098
  • PayPal to nellamaesfarm@gmail.com
  • Or, just drop $8 in the farmstand, at our market booth or mail a check to 69361 Antles Lane, Cove, OR 97824.

Time to roast and freeze or can tomatoes for winter

Call or text me to order a bulk box of tomatoes for freezing or canning. I can deliver them Friday evening to Union, Cove or La Grande or leave them for you at the farmstand in Cove for pick up on Saturday. $2.50/lb.

At the farm we roast and freeze all the "uglies" regardless of variety and cannot recommend this enough! They don't have to be romas or paste tomatoes to be worth preserving! Our friends at Blind Date Coffee prefer roasting cherry tomatoes, in fact.

All you need is tomatoes, ziplock freezer bags, and an oven. That's it!

Check out our easy-peasy recipe here.
Brisket!
Last chance to order beef! Deadline: Sept 10
I am helping a neighbor friend with his first herd. If you're interested in a quarter beef, let me know and I'll sign you up for a quarter or half. The prices and system will work as it always does--the grass-finished beef is just coming from my neighbor Jorge Hernandez.

Click here to read about the process and prices.

Please call or email to reserve your beef by Sept 10. 541-910-4098, farmer@nellamaesfarm.com
