The Campus Boundaries Project

IDHE is proud to announce the launch of The IDHE Campus Boundaries Project: Identifying Gerrymandering Risks for Undergraduates. Amidst the current redistricting cycle, following the 2020 census, college students’ communities are at risk of being gerrymandered as partisan redistricting processes unfold. This tool allows users to look at specific areas of interest (e.g., their own student communities) to learn where the student population is concentrated and how that area has been divided to create districts. Users can also use this tool to identify campuses within or near district boundaries. Because of the nation’s history of purposeful disenfranchisement of voters of color, we also enable users to examine the demographic composition of communities of student interest.

You can read a full description of how to use the tool, our initial takeaways, and explore communities of interest at idhecampusboundaries.org. Join us for a webinar walkthrough of the resources on Wednesday, September 22nd at 2 pm ET (register here).

NSLVE Release Update

Last month, we announced an anticipated release date of September 2021 for both our campus NSLVE reports and our national report, which will include data from the 2020 election.

As we progressed in the data analyses, we came to a team decision to hold the releases several weeks for one major reason: The COVID pandemic shifted enrollment patterns -- particularly among international students in the U.S. (who are ineligible to vote) -- to such a degree that relying on past international enrollments would have resulted in skewed estimates, particularly on campuses with normally high numbers of international students. With updated IPEDS data that we’ve received this week, we will be able to proceed and share your data with confidence soon.

We now estimate that campus reports and the national report will go out in mid-October 2021. In the meantime, now is the time to send us any updates idhe@tufts.edu

We’re also happy to answer any other questions you may have in the interim. Be on the lookout soon for info from IDHE on upcoming webinars and resources around the upcoming report releases.

A New Look for IDHE

One of the goals for IDHE in 2021 was to refresh a few aspects of our look and digital presence. Take a first look at our new logo above, and visit our website, newly reorganized and still undergoing upgrades as we speak. As always, you can find information on NSLVE, our Election Imperatives reports, and our full suite of (now sortable!) resources on the site -- hopefully now all easier to find!

CYPP’s Constitution Day 2021

This Friday, September 17th, the Eagleton Institute of Politics’ Center for Youth Political Participation (CYPP) at Rutgers University is offering a free, digital celebration of Constitution Day. The event will feature a moderated conversation between Patricia Keefer, an original youth organizer behind the 1971 push for ratification of the 26th amendment (which lowered the voting age to 18), and youth organizers from across the U.S. Register for this event on the CYPP website.

The Institute for Democracy & Higher Education is dedicated to shifting institutional priorities, practices, and culture to advance student political learning, equity, and engagement in democracy. We fulfill our mission through research, resource development, and support for institutions interested in improving their campus political learning climate. The National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) - the Institute’s signature initiative - is both a service to campuses to learn their student voting rates and a research database for IDHE.
