Durham - a county excited about culture!

Dear Friends,

It's hard to believe it's September and the start of the new school term already. Let's hope the wonderful weather this week continues through the month so that we can get outside and enjoy our beautiful county and all the fantastic outdoor cultural offerings open to us.

We are all so excited about the ideas and thinking taking place around the county on Durham 2025 and our proposal for City of Culture. We all have our fingers crossed that we are on the long list of places invited to submit a full bid when the list comes out at the end of the month. You may have already seen that 20 places across the UK sent in expressions of interest, so we are in no doubt that this is a very competitive process. But we are up for it!

In this issue, we cover information about how to get involved in Durham 2025, details of a session tomorrow for creative practitioners and information about a Northern Saints Trails photography competition, as well as lots of funding opportunities.

To keep up with our latest news in between newsletters, do follow us on Facebook and Twitter. In the meantime, stay safe and well.

All the best,

Tony

Calling all cultural and creative practitioners in County Durham!

Thursday 9 September 2021, 5.30pm to 7pm at Durham University or on Zoom

We would like to invite you to a special briefing on County Durham’s current status with our bid to be UK City of Culture 2025, in-person and on Zoom. The #Durham2025 campaign aims to secure the title for the whole county, and we’d like to tell you where we are at with the bid.

We’d like to hear from you as to how you would like to be involved and how a potential UK City of Culture status would help the recovery of County Durham’s cultural sector, creative industries and the wider region. Register here for the in person event at Durham University

Due to Covid mitigation, we are limited to 50 in-person places. But the session will also be held virtually via Zoom, at this link:

https://durhamuniversity.zoom.us/j/99707988642pwd=UXdqSTNNWUFVY214VDlDYXZSdzdsZz09

The event is hosted by Durham County Council, Durham University, Culture Durham Partnership, Visit County Durham, Creative Fuse NE, Summer In The City Festival, and Digitale.

County Durham – No Ordinary County

County Durham’s campaign to become UK City of Culture 2025 is gathering pace and there are lots of ways you can get involved.

In July, Durham County Council with principal partner Durham University expressed an interest in the prestigious title on behalf of Culture Durham.

The Durham 2025 bid aims to secure the title for both county and city, meaning communities across the county would benefit from a national spotlight being turned on our vast and varied landscape, heritage and cultural offer.

These benefits cannot be overstated. Hull was UK City of Culture in 2017 and this was directly responsible for almost £90 million of investment. Coventry, meanwhile, has secured more than £100,000 million to support cultural projects since being named UK City of Culture 2021.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has already committed to provide a £3 million award to 2025’s winning location. And with County Durham’s track record of securing investment and staging world class events such as Lumiere and Kynren, we are in a strong position to maximise these benefits for the entire region and enhance our vibrant and inclusive cultural offer.

However, to be successful we need your support. Here are some simple ways you can get involved:
•    Pledge your support on the Durham 2025 website at: www.durham2025.co.uk/get-involved/
•    Follow our social media accounts www.facebook.com/durham2025, www.twitter.com/durham_2025 and www.instragram.com/durham2025_
•    Share pictures of your favourite places in County Durham on social media using the hashtag #Durham2025. It could be one of our stunning heritage sites, your favourite live music venue or coffee shop, or the pitch where you play five-a-side football each week.
•    Submit your ideas for cultural projects that could be developed in the bid at: www.durham2025.co.uk/get-involved/

All ideas are welcome!

This year, for the first time, the Department for Digital Culture Media and Sport allowed groups of towns to work together to submit joint bids. A record 20 locations expressed an interest. The six finalists will be announced at the end of September and will have until January 2022 to submit their full bids. The winning location will then be announced in May.

Exciting plans are already being drawn up for County Durham’s bid, with the People’s Food Project just one of the ideas being developed. Announced last week, the project will explore food as an expression of cultural identity and a means of bringing people together, as well as looking into issues such as food waste. Click here to read more about the project.

We will be sharing more ideas in the weeks ahead so please follow the Durham 2025 social media accounts for the latest updates.
