Dear Oenophile,
We love Grower Champagne here at Benchmark Wine Group. Referring to wines bottled and made by the same person who grew the grapes and tended the vineyard, this has historically not been the tradition in the Champagne region in France. Before the “Grower” movement, most Champagne varietals (Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay primarily) were sold to larger Champagne houses. But some of these vineyard owners got savvy; their fruit is precious – and perhaps a Vigneron can do it better. There is something very romantic about being able to see through your wine from vine to bottle to its truest expression of terroir so that family tradition can shine. Now that’s not to say we don’t also adore the tried and true classic Maison styles such as Krug or Dom Perignon, but there is something to be said for a truly hand crafted bottle of sparkling wine. Below are some of our favorite producers right now. Savor these small lot Champagnes!
Cheers!
The Benchmark Crew
