The Lutheran's Confession

Sometimes visitors to Lutheran worship are startled to hear a whole congregation of people say together that they are “poor, miserable sinners.” Many Christians use this as an opportunity to shake their heads at those crazy Lutherans who say the strangest things. Do we have a low opinion of humanity? Yes and No.

We do believe “Through Adam's fall human nature and our essence is completely corrupted.' The damage is so indescribable that it cannot be recognized by our reason but only from God's Word. The damage is such that only God alone can separate human nature and the corruption of this nature from each other.” (Formula of Concord, Art. I, paragraph 9)

But at the same time there are no people on the face of this earth that are more pro-life than us because we believe that our human nature (body and soul) were created by God and redeemed by his Son. We believe that our bodies and souls will be raised together on the day of resurrection and that on that day the Holy Spirit's sanctifying work will be fulfilled in each one of us in a glorious way.

When we confess that we are “poor, miserable sinners” we are not saying that we are worthless. We are saying that we do not find our worth in a mirror or in the praise of men, but, instead, as Lutheran's we are confessing that our worth is found in the creative, redemptive, and sanctifying work of our triune God.
