The CommUNITY Diversity Group of La Grange is sponsoring its Diversity Days events, including our 30th Annual Race Unity Rally on Sunday, September 12th at 3:00 p.m. at La Grange Village Hall. This event features information about African Americans in historic La Grange, a youth choir with Rev. Shawana McGee, youth reading diversity essays, and a Village of La Grange Race Unity Day proclamation. In addition, we will hear from La Grange Police Chief Jason Cates and the new LTHS Superintendent Dr. Brian Waterman as to diversity and inclusion efforts ongoing in their organizations.

Also at this year's Rally, we are proud to announce that our Diversity Achievement Award is being presented to Pastor Sean Williams, Lyonsville Congregational Church, for all of his antiracism work in our community, most especially his initiative to create the "Building An Anti-Racist Community Together: Action for All Ages" Conference in April 2021. We are equally proud to announce the awarding of the inaugural Minnie Carr Community Service Award to the Lacey-Hill Community Outreach Foundation for their awesome work in our community, including an annual Thanksgiving Dinner, as well as groceries, school supplies, meals and more. Please come out and support Race Unity Day in La Grange and celebrate the diversity in our community.

Our theme for the 30th Annual Race Unity Rally is: "Racial Healing Through Understanding Our History." It was inspired by James W. Loewen, who died this week at age 79. He was the author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong," and "Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism" among others.  He firmly believed and often repeated, "Telling the truth about the past helps cause justice in the present. Achieving justice in the present helps us tell the truth about the past."

The Presbyterian Church of Western Springs (53rd & Wolf) is sponsoring a one-day drive-thru book drive in conjunction with Bernie's Book Bank!! Please drop off new or gently used children's books at the church on Saturday, September 25th from 10 am to 2 pm.  On-site volunteers will gratefully accept your book donations. Place your books in the trunk of your car for a touch-free drop-off.  We are accepting for new or gently used books for newborns through grade 6 readers.  61% of low-income families have no books in their homes for their children. Bernie’s Book Bank distributes FREE QUALITY BOOKS increasing book ownership among local under-served children.

Bernie's Book Bank is the leading provider of quality books to under-served children in five counties across the Chicago-land region. Their work provides under-served children twelve (12) free quality books each year. Through the program, children garner a home library of books helping make readers who can become leaders. Bernie's has distributed over 19 million books since its inception 11 years ago. We'd love having our community heartily support the wonderful mission of Bernie's Book Bank.

Feel free to share this flyer with friends, business associates, clubs, or organizations in our area. If you have questions, please feel free to contact the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs at 708-246-5220.
