The Widow’s Offering: A Stewardship Devotional

“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.”  ~Mark 12:41-42

This passage in Mark’s gospel begins to recount a story told about people from different parts of the country coming to Jerusalem to worship. As was the tradition, offerings were being made. Worshippers lined up to give while priests watched the giving ceremony. As worshipers dropped their coins into the temple treasury, the coins made a loud noise, the rich making a big, haughty show of it.

The story continues with this: “Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’”    ~ Mark 12:43-44

One might conclude from this story that God wants us to give everything we have. But that’s not true. What is true, what the story really tells us, is that giving is a reflection of our relationship with God. Giving shows generosity and is an act of worship. Gifts of any size are pleasing to God when given out of gratitude and a spirit of generosity rather than one of conceit.

This devotional was inspired by an article written by Stephen H. Bindas, Stewardship Director, Ikeja, Lagos

Father God, may we be known to you as humble servants, good stewards of your gifts.
