World food sustainability leaders launch the Demand Generation Alliance focusing on sustainable and nutritious food

Key players in the sustainable food sector, including the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, have launched the Demand Generation Alliance (DGA). It will seek pressure from consumers and wider society for an urgent shift to more sustainable and nutritious foods. The DGA will use social and cultural strategies to get people to voice their food preferences.

Pakistani youth uses e-health to change rural lives

Almost 70% of the Pakistani population lives in underserved rural areas, where healthcare services are hindered by the lack of medical personnel, sparse facilities, and the high cost of treatments. Things worsened in the wake of the pandemic, which disrupted supply chains and interrupted the delivery of vital medicines. Young trailblazer Muhammad Sarim Raza is using technology to deliver healthcare services to medically underserved communities in Pakistan.

ISO standards help reduce the amount of debris in our galaxy

The recently launched Space Sustainable Rating aims to improve the health of the near-Earth environment. The global initiative has been led by the World Economic Forum, together with the European Space Agency, the Space Enabled Research Group at the MIT Media Lab, and the University of Texas at Austin and Bryce Tech. Several standards and guidelines provided by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are at the heart of the initiative.

CERN technologies are being used to evaluate the risk of COVID-19 transmission

As children return to school, the CERN-developed COVID Airborne Risk Assessment tool (CARA) is helping researchers from the University of Geneva evaluate different ways of limiting COVID-19 transmission in the classroom. For instance, it was found that natural ventilation – while a necessary measure – is more effective in winter than in summer. The tool has further knowledge-transfer potential and can be applied in other indoor spaces, such as higher education institutions.

WHO and UNICC deliver mYoga App

The World Health Organization (WHO), together with the Government of India, recently launched the WHO mYoga app. Developed by the International Computing Centre (UNICC), the app includes video and audio yoga learning and practice sessions that users around the world can enjoy in the comfort of their homes. The sessions can also be downloaded to be used offline. UNICC is currently working on the second version, available in all six UN languages and with some improvements.

ILO and IUCN sign an agreement to promote jobs/nature interdependence 

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that emphasizes the interdependence between jobs and nature. The partnership aims to formalize cooperation on the creation of decent jobs through investments in reforestation, soil and water conservation, environmental rehabilitation and climate change adaptation.

The United Nations exhibition “Divers Egales Unis” opens at the Musée Rath in Geneva

Until 10 October 2021, over 200 artworks from the United Nations Art Collection will be on display for the very first time at the Musée Rath in Geneva in an exhibition entitled DIVERS EGALES UNIS. In celebration of the values of multilateralism and the Charter of the United Nations, the exhibition includes “Palais des Nations: A Time for Reflection”, a photographic work by the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, and the photo exhibition “Not a Woman’s Job?”.
