Making Sailing Accessible

As the Paralympic Games wrap up in Tokyo, sailors around the world ask: where was the sailing? After being in every Games from 2000-2016, Parasailing was omitted from Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, based on an evaluation by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) that the sport could not fulfill their minimum criteria for worldwide reach.

In response, World Sailing has committed to getting Parasailing back into the Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

In this month’s Currents, we asked Member Clubs about their efforts to make sailing inclusive and accessible. From the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, we learn about a Sailability event that introduced 20 wheelchair-bound women to sailing. From Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee in Berlin, we read about a new Inclusivity Working Group and the Club’s experience hosting the 2nd annual Inclusion World Cup. Meanwhile, at Royal Southern Yacht Club, ICOYC President David Mead reached out to lifetime member and local disabled sailor Geoff Holt, and Holt shared his story

Clearly, accessibility is an international priority for our sport, and our Clubs are working hard to advocate for inclusivity both on and off the water.
