Afghanistan Update:
Western Union Discontinues USD Payouts in Afghanistan
On 2 September, Western Union resumed all money transfer operations within Afghanistan. Additionally, the company waived all fees for sending money to Afghanistan from 3 September to 17 September. Some limitations will remain, however, Western Union said on Thursday. Money was intended to be paid out in US dollars (USD) or Afghanistan’s currency, the Afghani (AFN), and payout will only be available in some locations, mostly in Kabul. Meanwhile, outbound services –sending money outside of the country–  are currently suspended.

Speaking with Reuters News Agency, Jean Claude Farah, Western Union’s president for Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said a push by the United States to facilitate humanitarian aid to the Afghan people had given the company confidence to restart its operations.

However, on 8 September, the company notified its customers that it will no longer be completing money transfer payouts in Afghanistan with USD. As of 7 September, only AFN payments will be available in Afghanistan.
