Paws and Relax Paws-Fest 2021

Local business Paws and Relax at Eagle Farm held a wonderful event for our furry friends last week - The Paws-Fest - with great stalls and some really informative sessions, including dog first aid and understanding dog behaviours. Funds raised from the event went towards the RSPCA.
|

We also held a lucky door raffle prize for people to enter at our stall on the day and the lucky winner was Trish from Ascot. Her lovely girls Gemma and Katie were very excited and have loved playing with their new toys.

A reminder to all our dog owners to make sure their pets' registrations and vaccinations are up to date. We also have dog poo bags and collapsible dog bowls in the Racecourse Rd Ward Office if anyone needs them.

Crosby Road Bushcare Group Need Volunteers!
|
|
|
We have a mighty bushcare group looking after the pocket of bush down from the Bartley's Hill Reservoir and lookout. The Crosby Road Bushcare Group working bee is on again this Sunday! 26 September from 8 am - 10 am they will be meeting at the Crosby Road stairs and all volunteers are welcome, just bring your gloves, hat and protective clothing as you spend a couple hours outside, regenerating the site

Earlier this month, the Native Plants Queensland market was on and they heard about Brisbane Catchments Network Big Butterfly Count. This popular census of Brisbane’s butterflies can be conducted anywhere in Brisbane between October and March, be it in your garden, your local park, a schoolyard. Take time to observe and compare your sightings with those butterflies depicted in the brochure. Keep in mind that this is only a selection of common and easily recognisable species occurring in Brisbane. |

Last Free Green Waste Weekend This Weekend

September 25 & 26 is the last free green waste disposal weekend and I'd like to encourage you to take advantage of it this weekend to prepare your property for the upcoming storm and bush fire seasons.
ACCEPTABLE ITEMS:
- branches
- palm fronds
- weeds
- tree and shrub prunings
- loose bark
- grass clippings
UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS:
- kitchen waste, including fruit and vegetable scraps
- animal droppings
- plastic, paper and glass recycling
- general waste
- large logs, branches and stumps.

Last Days to Apply for a Seniors Celebration Donation for 2021
|
|
|
Applications for the Schrinner Council Seniors Celebration Donation program are still open and can provide funding of between $100 and $300 to seniors groups and organisations towards the cost of activities such as social outings, bus trips and Christmas parties.
Eligibility
An applicant should be a:
club or group providing activities for seniors that is not funded by other sources or
seniors' group that is part of other organisations.
Making an application:
There are three ways to make application to the Seniors Celebration Donation program:
- Online applications can be made from Council’s website via https://brisbane.smartygrants.com.au/seniors2021-22
- Contact the call centre on 3403 8888 and request for a form to be sent via mail
- Visit the Hamilton Ward Office to collect an application form.

It has been 66 years since the class of 1955 graduated from Ascot State School. This class holds an annual reunion for everyone to catch up and this year used the Schrinner Council's Senior Celebration Donation Grant to assist with costs. They did a joint birthday cake to celebrate their 80th birthday's together. So wonderful to see.

Footpath Care and Construction
|
|
|
The Schrinner Council has poured enough concrete into new and improved footpaths across Brisbane in the last financial year to cover Suncorp Stadium’s hallowed turf more than 15 times over. If you connected all of Brisbane’s footpaths together, you could walk to Alice Springs and back and every day we’re working to make journeys on foot safer.
In the past year, we’ve completed 168,969 square metres of maintenance and construction. This includes more than 1580 general maintenance repairs, replacing nearly 24,500 square metres of footpaths and creating more than 39,164 square metres of new ones. This financial year Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is investing a record $45 million to improve and expand our footpath network. |

Kerbside Collection 2021-2022

Kerbside Collection has been fast-tracked to come back 12 months earlier than planned. Kerbside large item collection services will return across the Hamilton Ward from October 2021 through to January 2022, helping residents dispose of large household items.

This innovative, contemporary music program has a proven track record of unearthing the best new talent and shining a spotlight on our wonderful city's diverse music industry.
We've watched QUBE Effect alumni such as Sycco, Beddy Rays and Hope D go on to make triple j’s Hottest 100 and perform at some of the country's largest music festivals.
The program provides 24 local acts a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work alongside music industry experts, produce their own music video and hone their live performance skills. Seniors - Council's Cabs Service

The Council Cabs service organises shared taxis at scheduled times for residents who find it difficult to get to their local shops to do essentials such as grocery shopping, banking and using post office services.
You can use Council Cabs if you are:
- over 60 years old, or
- mobility impaired, or
- a Pensioner Concession Card or Centrelink Seniors Cardholder.
To book a Council Cabs service, phone 07 3403 2227. Reserve your seat up until 12 noon the day before using the service or request that your booking is made permanent, at the time of booking, passengers will be advised of the pick-up and collection time. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available on request.

Please Dispose of Your Face Masks Responsibly
When disposing of a mask, cut the ear strings of the mask so it is less of a choking hazard to wildlife and put it in a sealable bag to ensure the used mask won’t be touched by others. Then put the sealed bag in the bin.
Always wash your hands immediately after removing your mask and putting it in the bin.

7000+ Solar Panels at Council Sites

The Schrinner Council is leading the charge in creating a clean, green and sustainable city, with the number of solar panels installed at Council sites reaching 7000. Rooftop solar has been rolled out at more than 40 sites across Brisbane, including libraries, environment centres, cemeteries and works depots.
I am proud that Schrinner Council is certified carbon neutral, and is constantly looking at ways to reduce our footprint and rooftop solar is one way we can have a real and direct impact. We're passionate about creating a clean and green Brisbane, so I know we will continue to investigate ways of working better, more efficient and reducing our carbon footprint.

High-Powered Small Business Roundtable
|

|
Schrinner Council has unveiled a new high-powered roundtable to help deliver a successful 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games while ensuring Brisbane remains the most small business-friendly city in Australia. Initiatives from the Economic Recovery Taskforce included a six-month rate freeze for residents, a multi-million dollar support package that provided rent waivers and reimbursements to businesses and direct assistance grants for community groups.
These initiatives complemented a range of measures undertaken by the Schrinner Council to help Brisbane businesses, including the Buy Local procurement policy which has seen $950 million flow to local businesses in 2020-21 and the successful seven-day payment terms for suppliers. The Small Business Roundtable will be asked to look at measures across the spectrum that will help Brisbane deliver the best-ever Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as new opportunities for local operators.

Australia's Only Paralympic-Grade Goalball Court!
|
|
|
With the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in full swing, local athletes are getting in on the action thanks to the Schrinner Council’s investment in Australia’s only Paralympic-grade Goalball Courts. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I met with Amanda Mather, CEO of Albion's Sporting Wheelies, and some Goal Ball enthusiasts, to have a look at the new spring wooden floor installed with funding provided by the Lord Mayors Community Fund.
Goalball is a sport exclusively for athletes with a vision impairment - the objective is to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal while the opposing players try to block the ball with their bodies. Through sports like Goalball, health and fitness, active recreation, and by building inclusive communities, Sporting Wheelies enables Queenslanders with a disability to live a more active and healthy life.

Hamilton Town Hall Refurbishment
|

I am pleased to advise that works to upgrade the Hamilton Town Hall at Rossiter Parade and Racecourse Road, Hamilton will start in September 2021, weather and site conditions permitting.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Council.
The refurbishment works will include:
- new floor coverings, curtains and ceiling fans, and installation of LED lights
- repainting of internal rooms
- refurbishment of male and female amenities
- kitchen refurbishment with new appliances
- restoring original heritage painting scheme
Construction will generally take place Monday to Saturday, between the hours of 6:30am and 6:30pm. Council will provide advance notification of any required out-of-hours works during construction.

Welcome Our Olympians Home!
|

|
Queensland’s inspirational Olympians and Paralympians will be welcomed home with a parade and reception through the Brisbane CBD on 8 October. The celebrations in Brisbane will mark one of Australia’s most successful Olympics yet with athletes bringing home a total of 13 gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is encouraging parents and grandparents from across Brisbane to bring children to the parade and watch Queensland’s amazing athletes be awarded the Keys to the City.
With the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games locked in, this is a chance for kids to see our athletes up close and begin dreaming of emulating their incredible feats on home soil. If Queensland was a nation, we would have ranked seventh on the medal tally – ahead of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy.
Preparations are underway to have the Olympians travel down the Queen Street Mall to a stage at King George Square. Event is dependent on continuing to contain the spread of COVID.

Brisbane’s unpredictable storm season is forecasted to be wetter than usual so I would like to urge you to act early to prepare your homes, families and businesses for this season. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a 75% chance of above-average rainfall for Brisbane, which could result in increased thunderstorms, flash flooding or localised flooding.
The Schrinner Council is doing its part to get ready by working alongside a range of different agencies, including the Australian Red Cross, Queensland Police Service and The Salvation Army, in a mock evacuation centre scenario to test our efficiency and COVID-Safe practices.
You can prepare for severe weather by:
- Signing up to Council’s free Early Warning Alert Service (via the Weatherzone app or registering online).
- Cleaning leaf litter from your roof, gutter and downpipes, and packing away loose items around the home. (please maintain safety while doing this)
- Knowing your flood and bushfire risk. Council’s Flood Awareness Maps are a good starting point. http://floodinformation.brisbane.qld.gov.au/fio/
- Having an evacuation plan and emergency kit that includes items such as first aid supplies, non-perishable food and water, a torch, candles, portable radio and car charger for your mobile phone.

Miegunyah House Museum- Open Day
|
|
|

Miegunyah, built-in 1886, was originally the home of the Perry family. The house is richly decorated with iron lace balustrades with filigree columns and friezes and furnished in the style of the late 19th century. This elegant Queenslander is on its original block and has been lovingly restored by the Queensland Women’s Historical Association to mostly its original appearance. It is furnished with many items belonging to Queensland’s pioneer families and is heritage listed on both the National and Queensland registers.
The Queensland Women's Historical Association (QWHA) is holding an Open Day on 10th October from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm to Miegunyah. Admission will be free. There will be Devonshire teas, a Book Sale and a Craft stall. Address: 35 Jordan Terrace Bowen Hills.

The Hamilton Ward Office accepts donations for Care Kits for Kids, an organisation doing great work to make a difference in those children's lives.
Care Kits for Kids Qld Inc is a not-for-profit registered charity whose volunteers distribute free Care Kit backpacks to Queensland children in out-of-home or crisis care. There are currently over 10,200 children in out-of-home care in Queensland alone. (Dept of Child Safety, Youth and Women, 2019).
New backpacks are filled with age-appropriate new donations of clothing, toiletry and educational items for distribution to government and non-government child protection services agencies, foster agencies, domestic violence agencies, and police child protection units to help support children in crisis or out-of-home.

With the last couple of turbulent years, connecting with one and other has never been more important. In the past Queensland Seniors have celebrated Qld Seniors Week! But for the first time, they will be celebrating Queensland Seniors Month which will go from 1- 31 October, with the theme of Social Connections.
Seniors Month aims to:
- Improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing.
- Facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

Need a Justice of the Peace?
|
|
|
JP’s and C.Dec’s are able to witness people signing documents as prescribed by law including statutory declarations, affidavits, land title transactions, wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advanced Health Directive as well as certifying copies of documents as true copies. They are also called upon to witness a variety of documents which are those not prescribed by law but are equally important to the person attending.
The JP’s in the Community program was launched in 2003 for Justices of the Peace (JP’s) and Commissioner of Declarations (C.Dec) to volunteer their services at community venues across the state of Queensland.
Volunteers who participate in the program work under the authority and guidance of the Justice of the Peace Branch, a division of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.
All JP’s and C.Dec’s must meet certain qualifications and standards to participate as volunteers in the program. They are appointed to serve all members of the community.

In order to help as many members of the community as possible to properly secure their vehicles’ registration plates, the North Brisbane District Crime Prevention Unit has developed packs containing anti-theft screws.
Anti-theft screws are a special type of ‘one-way’ screw which when used to attach your registration plate to your vehicle, can only be removed with a specially designed tool.
This special removal tool is not sold to members of the public and can only be used by police officers. With this simple step, you can save yourself the cost and trouble of having to replace stolen number plates.
If you are a North Brisbane resident, not only can you pick up free anti-theft screws from your local police station, but you can also order them online using a simple form. You can find out more information below.

Probus Day - celebrating keeping busy, connected and active - the key to a happy retirement. Probus Day is celebrated annually on 1 October each year. This date acknowledges the United Nations’ Day of Older Persons which was declared by the UN over 30 years ago as an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society.
Throughout the pandemic, Probus plays a key role in ensuring that its members stay active, in communication and engagement. To highlight the continued importance of staying connected, this years’ Probus Day will focus on the positive social connections that Probus provides.
