Presentation on the current state of the Local Plan

Dear Member

I want to bring to your attention a meeting which has been organised by The Harpenden Society.

Here are the details:

‘A presentation on the state of the Local Plan’.

To take place in the Katherine Warington School on  23 September starting at 8.00pm in the main hall of the school. Seating will be arranged to achieve as much social distancing as possible.

Entry is free. Plenty of parking is available at the school

Cllr. Jamie Day , who is the Portfolio Holder for Planning in St Albans District Council (SADC), will give a presentation on the progress SADC is making in developing a Local Plan. Following his talk, there will be a Q & A session.

To help The Harpenden Society calculate the required seating would you please book your seats by clicking here.

SADC is trying for the third time to put in place a Local Plan which meets both government targets for new house building in our District and the requirements of planning law and practice.

This time around, the Lib Dems and not the Conservatives have the unenviable task of working out how to construct a viable plan which will cater for the needs of existing residents as well as over three thousand incoming residents.

Unfortunately for the Lib Dems, the critical issues to be resolved in previous failed Local Plans remain the same as before. They have not gone away.

For example, in our January 2020 newsletter we said:

‘Not taking into account all the new build that is currently taking place all over Harpenden and thus within the greenbelt, the 1,340 new homes being planned for ‘North West’ and ‘North East’ Harpenden equate to 3,350 new residents at 2.5 residents per household. Assuming 2 cars per household, there will be an extra 2,680 cars on the Town’s roads.

In the case of the two sites, we doubt very much if the new residents will consider that they are handily placed to jettison their cars and use buses, walk or cycle which is what SADC wants residents to do’.

Perhaps Jamie Day has some fresh and magical solutions for the increased traffic volumes which will result from new build on Harpenden’s greenbelt.

As always, it would really help The Association if you would forward this email to those you know who live in Harpenden and who may be concerned about the provision of, for example, school places and medical facilities to cope with a much increased population in Harpenden.
