Welcome to the October 2021 Newsletter

The world leaders coming to Scotland for COP26 in November to agree on global climate action has been a unique opportunity for everyone to engage in more conversations on what we all need to do to prevent the worst of climate change. September's Climate Festival has shown that we can come together as a community on these important issues here in Tayport. Let's keep these conversations going this Autumn at a Pop Up Tomorrow community visioning event on 6th of November, with a view of starting more planet-friendly community projects. And for those of you inspired to take more effective individual action, we also continue to offer support through Carbon Conversation groups and Evenings with Climate.

We hope you enjoy this issue and remember further details about all the events and new stuff as it comes are available on our website and our Facebook page, or Instagram.

Thanks for making Climate Festival a success

PLANT and the Tayport Climate festival organising group thank everyone who contributed to making the festival happen and all those who came along to what turned out to be a fantastic weekend.

When we first started planning the Tayport Climate Festival in January 2021, we had only the haziest notion of what it would be like.  We did picture the various activities on offer: the walks, the talks, the demonstrations etc.  What we did not foresee was the incredible energy that the Festival would generate; the fun people (especially families and children) would have; and the incredible conversations we would all have around addressing climate change.

We did not picture the beautiful weather (in late September? It could have snowed!) that showed Tayport and its surrounding area to best advantage.  It has been a most memorable weekend!

Register for Pop Up Tomorrow: Tayport 2030

September’s Tayport Climate Festival created such an amazing buzz in our community. It was a real joy to come together and start some important conversations about our future.  It’s clear that we already do a lot in Tayport to take care of each other and the planet - but if we put our heads together we can do even more!

We would like to invite everyone to continue those conversations and imagine a future worth fighting for at a Pop Up Tomorrow event on 6th of November. The afternoon workshop will be followed by a community evening meal.

All are welcome! We would love to see contributions from individuals, community groups and local business owners based in Tayport.

We would like to cater for families with younger children too - if there is sufficient demand we will have a parallel session to entertain your young ones. Older children (>12 years old) should be able to take part in the main event.

Join Carbon Conversations this Autumn

It will take action at all levels to tackle the climate crisis. While international leaders are getting ready for their COP26 in Glasgow to discuss actions that governments are taking, our individual actions add up to make a big difference too. Every little contribution will help us avoid the worst of the climate crisis and build a better future.

Are you wondering what you and your family can do to effectively cut your own carbon footprint in the next 5 years? Join a Carbon Conversation group this October!

Carbon Conversations are Tayport Community Garden's 5-step programme of free and friendly group workshops to take real steps towards planet-friendly life with support from facilitators and others. We are starting two groups this Autumn-

  • Monday group, 6-8pm, starting October 18th
Both groups will be meeting online for 5 fortnightly sessions, until mid-December. If you can't make those dates or times  - please let us know. We may be able to accommodate your requirements by shifting the timings.

October Gardening Tip

This OCTOBER in your garden it’s time to propagate your herbs. Take cuttings of shrubby ones, such as rosemary and thyme. For others such as chives or marjoram now is a good time to divide the clumps and spread them out a bit. Try doing some herb swaps of divided clumps or cuttings with friends?

This is also a good time to plant garlic cloves for your next crop - just make sure you choose a sunny spot with good drainage. Lastly, with halloween approaching it's a good idea to raise your pumpkins and squash up a bit with bricks to stop them getting wet and show them a bit more sunshine to get them nice and ripe.

For more advice for your garden check out our workshop archive. We put upcoming workshops on our Facebook and events webpage.

If you want to gain more experience gardening with direction from our team, come volunteer in the garden with us and learn along the way! Email Ali on volunteer@tayportgarden.org for more info.

Community stories

We've had a couple of lovely stories from our community bloggers recently
This month we are also looking back on some October blogs from previous years to get some seasonal tips:
  • It's been a mixed year for apple harvests but for those who have a decent harvest, there are some inspiring recipes are included in this blog.
  • After tasting Tansy's delicious leek and tattie soup at the Climate festival, it reminded us of Peter's vlog that looked at some common problems when growing leeks
  • Do you fancy trying something new with your apple harvest? Check out our guide to making your own apple cider vinegar.

Do you have a story to share?
If you fancy having a go at storytelling with us, get in touch with Kaska on blog@tayportgarden.org. Whatever tickles your fancy - writing, photos, video, podcasts or simply telling a good tale around a campfire - we would love to have you! Training provided.
