This timely report from The Sentencing Project, Back to School Action Guide: Re-Engaging Students and Closing the School-to-Prison Pipeline, discusses opportunities and strategies for keeping children in school and on track for success as the new year commences.

Research

We were blown away by this report from Think of Us, titled Away From Home : Youth Experiences of  Institutional Placements in Foster Care. The report examines the experiences of foster youth using stories, art, and other first-person accounts to explore ideas for improving congregate care placements. A similar Maine based report to share is this recent release in the Place Matters series.

IN THE NEWS

Practice

The Freedom and Captivity initiative has launched! This state-wide, public humanities initiative includes art exhibitions, workshops, webinars, podcasts, public education, courses and other opportunities all this fall, with the goal of engaging the public on subjects including prison abolition, racial and gender injustice, and inter-generational trauma. The project is conceived with the participation of people in Maine directly impacted by the carceral system. Learn more here and check out the schedule of events here.

 
Also, the American Bar Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, along with several other health groups, adopted statements calling for a minimum age of juvenile court jurisdiction.  You can see their respective statements here and here.

R E G I O N A L    C A R E    T E A M S
Two regional care teams met in August.

Region 1: Did not meet in August after two care team reviews in July.
Region 2: Care team review of large funding request that raised issue of Mainecare termination for youth detained for more than 30 days.
Region 3: Several referrals in August as well as a care team review for a family struggling with housing and child care support. RCT connected with several housing options as well as agreed to fund activities for youth as family transitions.
