Pentecost 16

Let Us Pray (from The Treasury of Daily Prayer)

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; (Psalm 1:1)

O God, because without you we are not able to please You, mercifully grant that Your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Middle School Retreat: We are planning a Middle School Higher Things Retreat here at Village!!

Jesus calls us to live in the world, but not to be conformed to the world around us. This is a difficult challenge! There are so many different messages given to us about what kind of life we should live today—it can blow our minds! This retreat will focus on what the Bible says about the Christian life and how you as a junior high student live as a Christian today. At this retreat, you will get to think about how to live as a Christian in a 21st century world.

When: Nov.5-6, 2021
Where: Village
Cost: $35 per person
Registration deadline is Oct. 22.

You will find the registration forms online at https://www.villagelutheranchurch.org/higher-things-retreat.html. Please hand registration to Mireya.

September 22 Faith Formation Night

Please join your Village family each Wednesday for Faith Formation Night! Each week starts with a family meal starting at 5 PM, continues with education hour from 6 PM to 7 PM, and concludes with a brief service of Compline. Schola Cantorum (children's choir) and Psallite (high school and adult choir) rehearse at 4 PM and 7:15 PM respectively, so there are many opportunities to learn, share fellowship, and worship. There are educational opportunities for potty-trained children through "experienced" church members. If you plan on joining us for the meal, please sign-up here so we can provide enough food. See  you Wednesday!

Altar Guild Volunteers Needed

The Altar Guild needs at least four volunteers for Holy Communion setup and cleanup. One to two people can set the altar on Saturdays or early Sunday mornings, and another person or couple is needed to clean up after Sunday’s late services. The volunteer schedule rotates monthly, and training is available. Volunteers are also needed for other services (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc.) throughout the church year.

If you are interested in serving on the Altar Guild, please contact Marilyn Daughhetee (marilyn5162@att.net) or the church office (314-993-1834).

Stewardship Thought

Mark 9:32 – “But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.” The disciples really do hold up a mirror to our faces and force us to see ourselves. We are misunderstanding, afraid, confused. But the Word of God is clear if only we will listen with open ears. What was blocking the disciples’ ears? The Gospels tell us time and again. The disciples did not expect a suffering Christ. So when Jesus spoke of suffering, they plugged their ears and didn’t listen, and they ended up confused and scared. What about us? What’s in the Word of God that we find hard to hear and contrary to our desires and expectations? That might just be exactly what we need to hear!

Witness & Outreach Thought

Mark 9:30-37: When Jesus calls us to be His own, He calls us to a life of service which, on the surface, may seem too challenging and difficult.  The Good News is that He daily equips us to be His servants and witnesses.  What a privilege we have to speak of Jesus to people who have little or no direction in their lives.
