Shadab leans on his hands in a home where he's staying in Pakistan, Sept. 1. Despite having all his papers lined up, the Afghan high school senior was twice denied a student visa to study at Subiaco Academy.

A life interrupted

The refugee crisis in Afghanistan hit close to home for Subiaco Academy. As the Afghan government collapsed, a student named Shadab was prepared to travel nearly 7,500 miles to begin his senior year at the boys' high school. He was looking for a college-prep environment and a challenging curriculum to help him get into an American university. But where is Shadab now?

JUST ONE MINUTE

Do you like celebrating your birthday? My best birthday memory by far was when my family made a board game for me and the cards were what they affectionately called Dad-isms, all the phrases and habits that make me unique. We laughed so hard playing that game. This week we celebrated the birthday of Mary, Jesus’ mom. What an extraordinarily joyful day for her parents, Sts. Anne and Joachim. What a joyful day for each of us, as disciples of Jesus, that the mother of the Savior was born. Through baptism, Mary becomes also our spiritual mother.

Reflection: Today, acknowledge or celebrate our spiritual mom. Notice what your experience is like.

St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Sept. 23

Capuchin friar Padre Pio, who bore the stigmata, or wounds of Christ, invisibly from the time of his ordination in 1910 and visibly from 1918, gained worldwide renown for his ministry of prayer and healing. At San Giovanni Rotondo, he built a hospital to treat patients, as well as a pilgrimage and study complex. St. Pio died in 1968 at the age of 81. He was canonized in 2002.

What are your views on teaching children good work habits? Many of our friends don’t require their kids to help out or work around the house, but we both strongly feel that instilling a strong work ethic early in life is one of the best things you can do as a parent for your children.
What kids really need ...
