Sunday, September 12, 2021 - Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
The Rev. Dr. Henrietta (Rhetta) Wiley, Priest
Welcome Laura McGuire to Trinity!
Dear Friends in Christ,
I’ve been invited to say a little bit about myself, so here goes! I’m Laura McGuire and I’ve been working with Christian Formation in the Episcopal tradition since the early 1990’s. I have worked with children, youth, young adults, and adults and am very excited to be coming to Trinity, where formation is so central to the work of the Church. I come to you from St. Philip’s Church in Laurel, Maryland, where I have served as Director of Youth and Family Ministries for six years. A Baltimore native, I am excited to be working closer to home!
Raised Roman Catholic, imaginative engagement with the Bible was not especially encouraged (to say the least), so Godly Play and the Book of Common Prayer opened new ways of encountering God that have continued to nourish my faith through the years. You could say that Godly Play in particular was central to my becoming an Episcopalian. I have served the Church on the congregational, regional, and diocesan levels and love to share from those experiences. I have been a Godly Play trainer since 1999 and this year will be coming to you just after sharing Godly Play with the participants at the Wild Goose Festival over Labor Day weekend.
The ministry of all of the baptized is central to my theology and ministry, and centering prayer is a critical part of my daily practice of prayer. Social justice as a practice of faith is also important to me, and I’ve volunteered with SURJ Baltimore, GEDCO, and the food ministry of Be a Chef For a Day. I also volunteer regularly with the Towson University radio station, WTMD. My family, including my partner Don and children Sonic and Sparrow, lives in Homeland. In my spare time, I love to cook, make jewelry, listen to music, and seem to be continually relearning how to knit.
I can’t wait to get to know you and Trinity better – soon!
Yours in Christ,
Laura McGuire
