Dear friends of Maungatautari

Kia ora koutou, here is your latest edition of Maunga Matters.

From the Chief Executive Officer
by Phil Lyons
Kia ora Koutou,

At the time of writing, we are heading towards Alert level 2 and our team at SMM are now busy focusing on re-opening the visitor centre and welcoming back our communities to the maunga.

I would like to take this moment to pause and thank our team for their fantastic mahi throughout lockdown.
As essential workers, our Rangers have worked 24/7, to maintain the integrity of the maunga, and our taonga species within.

The face of the organisation, our visitor experience team, have continued to ensure excellent communication to our communities, sharing wonderful stories of the maunga, and ways to remain well during these challenging times.

Behind the scenes, our administration team have worked diligently, looking after the welfare of our staff, volunteers, and contractors, paying creditors on time, and ensuring compliance with the on-going requirements of running a business.

As we move into Alert level 2, there is still a degree of uncertainty.  Thankfully, we have a wonderful team, which gives me hope that no matter how challenging days may get, we will always find a solution and a way through.

Ngā mihi
Phil

Te wiki o te reo māori - Maori Language Week! 13th - 19th Mahuru (September) 2021!
Kia ora koutou!

This week is te wiki o te reo maori, otherwise known as Maori language week!

As te reo maori is a big part of our organisation and identity, we will be releasing more content around learning basic kupu/words and more around the traditional maori stories of our native wildlife!

Each day we will be teaching you basic māori kupu/words and simple tips you can use to encorporate te reo into your everyday life.

Keep an eye on our social media for more stories on the sanctuary through a te ao maori lens!

Sanctuaries  of New Zealand incorporated (SONZi) hui 10-12 August 2021
By Janelle Ward, Lawrence McGrath and Rickie-Lee Scanlon
After a brief hiatus SONZi was back in full swing this year, and what better way to kickstart the 17th Annual Sanctuaries Workshop than in Raetihi.  Centred between Tongariro maunga and the Whanganui river where the below saying encapsulates the people.

E rere kau mai te awa nui nei
Mai i te kāhui maunga ki Tangaroa
Ko au te awa
Ko te awa ko au.
The river flows
From the mountains to the sea
I am the river
The river is me.

Aiden Gilbert. Chairman Uenuku Charitable Trust

SONZi provides great insight into the science and innovation that goes into tackling Predator Free 2050.  The annual conference allows sanctuaries from all over Aotearoa an opportunity to come together and learn from each other.  Best practice learnings, pest control and ecological restoration such as the trapping of difficult-to-catch predators were shared by researchers and field operators alike.

Notably a nationwide pest control model for a coordinated push towards PF 2050 was presented for discussion, and Phil Lyons called for marketing coordination across Aotearoa’s sanctuaries network.  SMM also presented in the perennial favourite soapbox segment where short (5min or less) presentations on sanctuary innovations, observations, challenges and successes were welcomed.

Dan Howie provided an update on breaches and fence management, Dr Janelle Ward discussed species monitoring and translocations, and Craig Montgomerie gave an update on the ground-breaking strategy to save our taonga kiwi.

This year SONZi was hosted by Uenuku Charitable Trust who shared their aspiration to be the first iwi-led fenced sanctuary with the proposed 200-hectare Pōkākā Sanctuary.  It was a conference highlight to walk in the lush ngahere and be given the grand tour at the future sanctuary.  Given our earliest founding kiwi were gifted from Waimarino iwi, SMM will return the favour and share the mauri and mana of Maungatautari extending support to the proposed project with our experience and knowledge wherever possible.

Conservation Week at the Sanctuary
Freeman Ehu
Conservation week was a little different this year. With most of the nation in lockdown and confined to their bubbles, we had to think of new ways to explore our environment.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari created soundscape content, to provide audio to those missing the forest and birdcall, as well checklists and guides to keep your mental health in check during lockdown.

This has enticed our team to create more videos showcasing the sanctuary for those who can't visit!

Here is a video from our latest series: Sanctuary Songs of a beautiful call from a kiwi in the southern enclosure. Keep an eye out from more of the series and see if you can guess the future Sanctuary Songs!

Meditation on the maunga
By Rosie Cahalane
Tranquility of practising meditation within Te Tūī a Tāne Southern Enclosure.  The birdsong and gentle sounds of nature are an ideal setting to focus and reflect on 'inner' experiences.

During your day, we will encourage you to develop an attuned approach to your meditation and to your on-going experience.

Guidance will be offered by Elizabeth Day and Willa Thaniya Reid of Kihikihi Meditation & Yoga. They will guide you through sessions of walking and seated meditation. You will be encouraged to practice in silence. This allows a deepening of your ability to notice and reflect on ‘inner’ experiences, and to attune to all the maunga offers.
