Nominations Closing Soon - WA Seniors Awards 2021 |
|
The Council on the Ageing (COTA) WA is calling for nominations for this year’s Seniors Awards. Submissions to be received by COB Friday, 24 September 2021. |
|
The nomination process is for five (5) awards. The recipients are selected by a panel, with an awards ceremony held during WA Seniors Week (7-14 November 2021).
The following is the format for the 2021 WA Seniors Awards:
Five (5) categories
- WA Senior Metropolitan
- WA Senior Regional
- WA Age Friendly Business
- WA Age Friendly Local Government
- WA Seniors Advocate (new category)

WALGA Annual Aboriginal Forum ‘Doyntj Doyntj – Come Together’ |
|
Secure your spot at WALGA's annual Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Forum, this year themed 'Doyntj Doyntj - Come Together'.
|
|
Addresses will be provided by the Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt; the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC; and the Minister for Local Government, the Hon John Carey MLA.
Danjoo Koorliny leaders Dr Richard Walley, Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM and Carol Innes will discuss Walking Together Towards 2029 and Beyond and how we can create a better future for all.
The program will feature Reconciliation WA’s recently launched RAP Ready forum and showcases from Local Government on youth engagement, traineeships and employment, cultural safety, truth telling, place names and traditional landcare.

WALGA Webinar: Public Health - Illicit Drug Support for Local Government |
|
WALGA and the Mental Health Commission (MHC) will be hosting an online discussion seeking feedback on Local Government needs where drug use has been identified as an issue to be included in their Public Health Plan. |
|
This engagement will inform the development of a user friendly support resource that is co-designed with Local Government to ensure it is relevant to Local Government specific functions and needs. The online discussion will update Local Government's on the resource, identify issues and barriers and seek feedback on what to include in the resource.

Funding For Local Government Responses to Homelessness |
|
The State Government has announced the first of four annual grant rounds of the Local Government Partnership Fund for Homelessness. |
|
The fund will provide one-off financial co-contributions ranging from $25,000 to $200,000. Joint applications are accepted and Local Governments are encouraged to partner with each other when appropriate.
The first grant round is open for a 10-week period until 4:00pm, Friday, 15 October. |

Homelessness Knowledge Hub Project Officer Opportunity |
|
Shelter WA are seeking expressions of interest for a 6 month project officer secondment opportunity. |
|
The Project will facilitate access to best practice examples and case studies, and enable better collaboration between Local Governments, and between Local Governments and the community services sector, to prevent and to respond to homelessness.
Shelter WA are seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably skilled and experienced individuals to undertake key activities under the Local Government Homelessness Hub project. |

Department of Communities Grants for Women |
|
Grant applications are now open to support initiatives aimed at addressing some of the unique issues faced by women in WA. |
|
In the 2021-22 round of Grants for Women, the focus is to support initiatives responding to the gendered impacts of COVID-19 and provide recovery support. The grant guidelines outline that favourable initiatives will address safety and justice, and women’s economic independence.
The Grant Program aligns with the State Government’s Stronger Together: WA’s Plan for Gender Equality.
WA Local Governments are eligible to apply for up $10,000 funding, as well as community groups, non-for profits, and unincorporated organisations.
Applications close 4:00pm Tuesday, 12 October. |

Harmony Week 2022 Grants Now Open |
|
The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries is offering grants of $2000 to support community-led diversity and inclusion activities celebrating Harmony Week in 2022. |
|
Activities with a focus on culture and arts, and sport and active recreation are also encouraged.
Harmony Week grants are open to:
- not-for-profit organisations based in WA
- associations operating under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 based in Western Australia.
Applications close at 4.00pm, Monday, 4 October. |

Safe and Found Initiative Supports People Living with Dementia |
|
Safe and Found initiative compiles a detailed profile of people living with Dementia who are at risk of becoming lost or reported as missing. |
|
Safe and Found is an initiative introduced by Western Australia Police Force and Australia Medic Alert Foundation. In the event someone experiencing dementia or other cognitive impairment goes missing Police have immediate access to critical information to assist with the search.
A Safe and Found unique ID bracelet engraved with both a carers and police phone number is included with the membership package. Initial membership fees are $99 which include the Bracelet. The annual fee after the first year is $49.
The Seniors Sector Partnership group and WA Police Force encourages Local Governments to promote the initiative through its local networks. |

Local Government Policy Awards 2021 - Closing Soon |
|
The Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) are excited to announce that entries for this year’s Local Government Policy Awards are open until the end of September. This means there is still time for Local Governments to collaborate internally between departments and submit an application. |
|
The Awards provide a platform to celebrate the positive role that Local Governments play in promoting child health and wellbeing within the community. Local Governments are invited to submit in the following categories:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child & Young Persons Health
- Diversity, Inclusion or Multicultural Child & Young Persons Health
- Consulting with Children
- Young People Making a Difference in Communities
- Mental Health and Wellbeing for Children and Young People
- COVID Recovery and Response for Children and Young People
- Creating Healthy Environments for Children and Young People
- Promoting Healthy Behaviours for Children and Young People
Nominations are also open for the new ‘Trailblazer Award’, which recognises new and innovative projects where Local Government has stepped outside the comfort zone of the way they traditionally approach public health and wellbeing.

Feedback open for Statutory Review of the Mental Health Act |
|
The Mental Health Commission is undertaking a Statutory Review of the Mental Health Act (2014) to examine the operations and effectiveness of the Act.
|
|
A discussion paper has been developed to help guide a public comment period, with feedback sought on the Act as a whole, individual parts of the Act, and issues that have arisen since the Act commenced in November 2015.
Individuals with an interest in or experience under the Act, particularly lived experience, over the past five years are encouraged to participate in the review.
The Mental Health Commission is inviting interested parties to apply for grants to facilitate face to face engagement sessions with a diverse array of stakeholders who have a lived experience with treatment under the Act. The grant application period is open until 23 September, 2021.
The public comment period for the Statutory Review is open until 31 January 2022. At the conclusion of the review, a report and recommendations for potential amendments to the Act will be provided to Government. |

LG Professionals New Volunteer Management Network |
|
LG Professionals is calling for Committee Members for Local Government Volunteer Management Network. |
|
Notice is given for LG Professionals WA members to join the new Volunteer Network committee. This recently formed network aims to strengthen collaboration and support for volunteering across community and within Local Government. The Volunteer Network objectives include:
- To foster networks and shared understanding of current volunteer programs, services, and events
- To share ideas, inspiration, and support
- To provide a conduit of knowledge and tools to support best practice volunteer management, recognition, and community capacity building
- To strengthen networks and opportunities for partnerships and collaboration
- To encourage regular contact, information sharing and mentoring between members outside of formal meetings
- To provide access to professional development opportunities
To join the Committee and the Network, you will need to be a financial member of LG Professionals WA.

Environmental Health Handbook 2020-21 |
|
The Environmental Health Directorate in the Public and Aboriginal Health Division of the Department of Health, Western Australia, has released the Yearbook for the 2020-21 financial year. |
|
The Yearbook showcases the diverse and substantial operational, policy and project work of Department of Health and highlights the important role of Environmental Health in WA.
In the yearbook, the Department recognises the significant contribution of the Local Government environmental health workforce to their work. |

New Charter of Rights to empower parents, children and families |
|
The Charter of Rights for parents and families designed for parents and families to help navigate the State Government child protection system. |
|
The Charter outlines the minimum expectations for children and families in contact with Communities’ child protection system. The Charter recognises parents and families as key in supporting children’s right to life-long connection with family, community, country and culture.
The rights of parents and family in the Charter align with six themes:
- Respect
- Information
- Support
- Fair treatment
- Participation and inclusion
- Privacy and confidentiality.
