SPOTLIGHT ON SERENE CALKINS

Serene Rene’ Calkins, P.T., Brainspotting Consultant, Practitioner, and Specialty Trainer, is the owner of Art and Science Physical Therapy & Fitness in Fort Collins, CO, and has been practicing as a physical therapist for over 35 years. She began studying Brainspotting in 2016, and in July 2021 completed her Brainspotting Consultant training with Pie Frey and David Grand. She is looking forward to working with other Brainspotting Therapists to help them achieve certification, and to continuing her work as a specialty trainer.
Rocky Mountain Brainspotting Institute and the whole Brainspotting community are tremendously grateful to Serene for giving her time, energy, and positivity over the past three years to planning the 2021 International Brainspotting Conference, and as a member of RMBI and our board vice president. We’ve invited Serene to share the journey she has taken through Brainspotting – we hope you will be inspired by her commitment to expanding the understanding of how Brainspotting works to help people overcome trauma which is held in the body, and by her boundless energy.

How did you become involved in Brainspotting?
I have to begin by expressing my tremendous gratitude to David Grand. First, for answering “Yes” to my request as a Physical Therapist to study Brainspotting; second, for encouraging me to teach what I learned from five years of research on what happens in the body when we do Brainspotting; and third for our deep friendship. When David invited me to study Brainspotting in 2016, I brought with me a 30-year history of treating patients with chronic physical conditions as a Physical Therapist – so I viewed everything I learned about Brainspotting through the lens of how Brainspotting was actually impacting what goes on within a person’s body as they process, and also changing how the body was holding on to historical trauma.

Tell us more about how you have combined your knowledge of physical therapy with Brainspotting:
During these past 5 years, I’ve been fortunate to work with Pie Frey and David Grand and many other leaders in our field, and they have supported me in my research into blending Brainspotting and Physical Therapy. As the idea of developing a specialty training emerged, I began to collaborate with Mary Jane O’Rourke, LCSW, LMT, and together we created the "From Freeze to Thaw” Specialty Trainings. Mary Jane brought a depth of wisdom, kindness and skill to my research which allowed it to be shaped into a powerful clinical experience. I will be forever grateful for her partnership.

How are you incorporating all of this into your practice now?
I am re-focusing on my current practice and really look forward to collaborating with any Brainspotting Therapist or existing team, especially those whose clients may experiencing acute or sub-acute injury or recovering from surgery. I find it fulfilling to join with new patients/clients who have come to the end of a long journey and are wanting to bring together some remaining issues or, collaborating when someone is just beginning a long journey and they already have a team in place.

And you did all of this while working with David Grand and the rest of the conference planning team to make the 2021 International Conference happen?!
Work on the 2021 International Brainspotting Conference was amazing. Perhaps the best part has been the lasting friendships created with BSP therapists all over the world over the past three years.

Now that the conference is behind you, how are you filling your days?
Since the conference, I am evolving quite a bit. I am leaning into my interest in writing, teaching, and travel by combining them into a writing workshop into which I incorporate Brainspotting for creativity. In 2018 I created this workshop, Stepping Stones, for memoir and for fiction writers. I will take the Stepping Stones workshop on the road -  in my new camper van!

I am diving into my own writing as well - co-authoring a book with Pie (The Principles of Brainspotting: A Compass for Everyday Life) and writing my own book (The Art and Science of Healing: Resolving Chronic Physical and Emotional Pain and Trauma). We anticipate that both books will be published in 2023.

Personally, what is also important to me is photography, improving my skill at travel journal art (in ink, pastel and watercolor), hiking, walking, biking, board games - and a good joke...

The From Freeze to Thaw training will be offered twice more this year (
September and November). Next year we will offer the training 4 more times (two of those hybrid in Europe) and we will introduce “From Freeze to Thaw Phase 2: The Next Level” in April and October 2022.
