SEPTEMBER 2021
Back again - the months just keep rolling on and here it is approaching Labor Day already. I'll tell you a little bit about my summer art journey and show you some behind-the-scenes pictures and hope you will enjoy seeing where this last 3 months has taken me!  Hit reply to write, comment, argue or just say Hi...
The Summer Workshop
So my 10-week painting workshop ended last week - with an ongoing assignment and an offer of a 6-week 'extension' starting later this month.  I finished the first and signed up for the second.  In for a penny, in for a pound, a phrase some of you might remember....

The workshop was truly transformative for me - Called Finding Your Joy, I was in a tight-knit international online community of 1500 (!!) with an amazing artist-instructor and 6 coaches who were really THERE, one to one as needed, to help each of us figure out our personal artistic joy.  I learned a lot, I think my work changed a lot and I'm just a happy, paint-covered person who can't wait for part 2!

Meanwhile I got two of my paintings into gallaries last week and one sold on the first night!

OK, enough words.  Here are the visuals.  First, a shot of all the work from the workshop that I could gather into one image, not counting the ones I painted over, the two framed pieces at galleries and the unframed larger paintings in my art bin... Anyway, it was an energizing, instructive and productive summer.... and there are several new paintings on my website now.

Below is the final assignment: A series on "whatever you like."  I had a lot of trouble with that since I don't generally start with an intent.  I went for 'explore pink' a color a rarely use - and may not again! but ended up with what seemed to me to be an abstracted story of life.  They are each on 12" square cradled wooden panels.
Left to right: Unfolding, The Race, In Balance.

I loved making these.  And now I alternate between seeing cotton candy (ick!) and LIFE.  I'd love to have your reactions to the colors - I won't be offended! Some will love them some; will hate them.  I'd really be interested to know the where these colors sit with you.  If I get enough feedback, I'll report back next month!
Where to see my work
Can't Complain! First night of the show, my Red Sprites found a new home.  I have been able to get a replacement installed, Bailando #2, 24x18" framed.  This wonderful show runs until Sunday, Sept 12.  Go for some North Beach fun if you can, including NBFF (North Beach First Friday) TOINGHT.  Live Worms Gallery's First Anniversary Show, 1345 Grant Avenue, SF.  Open Wed - Sun 2 - 5pm, but later tonight for First Friday. The 'Au Revoir' Reception is Sunday 9/12 till 5pm.
And just opened this week, the Abstract World show at the SFWA Gallery, which runs until September 25th. I was very happy that my painting, Joyride was juried into the show and now hangs in a lovely setting above a gorgeous sculpture by Tachina Rudman-Young.  There's a reception on Saturday, Sept 4th from 2 - 4, 647 Irving Street, SF (all Covid precautions in place).  I will be there.  Hope you can make it as well!
If you like looking at jazz art (mine particularly!) while listening to the music live and enjoying good food, drink and ambiance, get yourself to the Broadway Grill on a Thursday 7-9, Friday or Saturday 5:30-8:30 or Sunday 12 - 3 for some live jazz.  Check their website for who's there when or call (650) 393-5897.  There are also Groupons available!  The photo at right is Eric Shifrin playing at at the Grill for Sunday lunch under my crazy photo art of him on the wall.
Back to the Photo World
I still get commissions occasionally, especially for musician shoots.  This one, of Billy Philadelphia who has been playing piano at San Francisco's One Market restaurant nearly every weekend for twenty odd years, was the most fun I've had behind a camera in ages. It was actually not all that straightforward to get those reflections in the lenses with the light, angle and fingers 'just right'.  Got it though and the restaurant has picked it up for their promotion. I'm very gratified.
Coincidentally, another sunglasses shot.  This was one of those "Wait! Stop!" moments.  Serendipity and a willing friend.  She just happened to be wearing those checkered sunglasses and I just happened to notice the crosswalk markings reflected in them.  It worked!  I plan to hang Crosswalk somewhere shocking one day but right now it's propped up on a shelf and also available on my website.  It's in a black metal frame 14 x 23". The mug stays with me.
A Word about Open Studios
San Francisco Open Studios happens shortly - too shortly for me to commit after making this rather momentous change of media, so as of this writing, I don't expect to be part of it (of course things change, but that's what I think today).  So I will again be hosting my own Open Studio in November and I have most years up until 2020.  I hope you will look out for the announcement and come if you can.  It will be in my apartment/studio and all paintings and available photo art will be on hand. Of course my 'studio' is always available to you by appointment, either on site or via zoom.  Just choose your time at calendly
Some other new works
A 17" square painting called Veils, this is on watercolor paper and shown with a white frame. Click the image for more details.
Also a 17" square painting, this one is called BeBop, shown here in a white frame.  Click image for more details.
The inspiration for this piece was the Leonard Cohen song, Anthem, which includes the lyrics, "that's how the light gets in", which is also the title of the painting.  Click image for more details.
This is a totally imaginary abstract landscape which I call Canyon Walk.  If it reminds you of wonderful hikes you've taken, click for full details!
The sale continues!
I still have a lot of my 2020 collages and they are staying on sale for now.  Entering the promo code MM25 will get you a 25% discount on anything in the COLLAGE section of my online store.  (Be sure to click 'APPLY' after you enter the code.
The standard finish!

MY WEBSITE - WHY DO I HAVE THREE?
1. Pretty much All of my artwork makes its way to jessicalevant.com -- you can browse, search, peruse information, dig through the newsletter archive, check out my blog ('News') and even peek at my travel pix (linked from the News page). In other words a huge site all about me!

2. Then there's my Online Store, jessica-levant-art.square.site which is for original, one-of-a-kind paintings and mixed media collages, framed (but if you want them unframed, ask me for the discount code) plus all the framed photo art that I actually have on hand now!  I will deliver within the SF Bay Area, or you can pick it up - curbside or in-studio as you like.  If you're further away, contact me and we'll talk about shipping.

3. But wait - there's more! There''s my Print-on-Demand Site at jessica-levant.pixels.com  where all photo-based works and archival prints of some of my paintings and mixed media pieces, can be ordered in many different sizes, on a choice of papers, framed or not, or on canvas, metal, acrylic or wood, and then you can check out all manner of products printed with my artwork! This is a commercial platform where you order what you want and tell them where to ship it and it arrives (all without me lifting a finger).
THE CARDS ...
Box of 8 of my 'Painted Bird' 5x7" notecards (blank inside).  The left image is 'SF Shorebirds' and on the right is 'Rainforest Birds'.  Each clear box holds 2 sets of 4 different birds inside and 8 envelopes.  Order them here: Shorebirds or Rainforest. Local Delivery included. (If shipping is needed, that's a little extra).

NOTE: I make cards of much of my work, and if there's something you'd like, singly or in quantity, boxed or not, please get in touch.  Most things are possible!
AND THE BOOKS ...
The two volumes of Bay Area Jazz and Bluesicians, with a total of 251 local musicians that I photographed while they performed are available on amazon.com (fastest way to get them) or online at www.bayareajazzandbluesicians.com (probably cheaper, and takes a week or so to receive them).  You can preview some of the pages on either site. Captured in 2013 and 2014, these books have become collectors' items.  75% of the included musicians are still performing in the Bay Area. The books can also be purchased at Glen Park's Bird & Beckett Books & Records  in San Francisco's Glen Park, or The Jazz Conservatory bookstore in Berkeley - or from me directly if you prefer.
