An Update on the Beautification of the Church
It is hard to believe that it has been over two years since the majority but not all of the beautification work was completed in our church. A few of the final pieces of that work are about to come to completion. The two new panels in reredos of the Annunciation painted by the artist Paul Wyse are scheduled to be installed this coming week. I believe you will find them to be beautiful and fitting for our church. These additional paintings will transform the reredos into a triptych of the life of our Blessed Mother. Beginning with her vocational call, when at the Annunciation she was asked by the Archangel Gabriel to be the Mother of the Christ and then at the conclusion of her life on earth, when she was Assumed body and soul into heaven.
Three plaques will soon be installed in the church. One will give a brief description of the Dominican Memorial, another of the Jubilee Portal and a third a description of the two illuminations located in the basses of the shines of Our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. These descriptions will help those who view these pieces of art to better appreciate them, but by no means will the descriptions be exhaustive. Good art and especially good religious art will always reveal something new to the viewer, each time they contemplate it.
Finally, a print of Rembrandt's Prodigal Son will soon be installed in the main Reconciliation Room. This is one of Rembrandt’s most famous and beloved paintings and one which is very appropriate for a room where God’s mercy is so lavishly poured out on his sons and daughters. Once the print is in place, the Reconciliation room will be left open for a couple of Sundays so that you can stop in and see it.
My deep appreciation to all who made a pledge and have or are fulfilling their pledge to the One Faith, One Hope, One Family-Capital Campaign, which made the beautification of our church a reality. We can rightly take pride in what we as the parish of St. Mary have accomplished.
Fr. Eilerman

September to Dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows
"For Catholics, September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows [memorial celebrated on Sept. 15], immediately following August’s devotion to the Immaculate Heart, and preceding October’s devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, September is an ideal time to strengthen our connection to Our Lady. Continuing our monthly series on ways to showcase each month’s Catholic theme in your life, here are 10 ways you can honor Our Lady of Sorrows this September:" Continue Reading...

Do you recognize this painted pattern on the right?
The image on the right should look familiar to you as it is a selection of the painted sanctuary wall pattern from our parish church. That repeated pattern includes several connections to Mary as the Sorrowful Mother. You'll find Mary's Immaculate Heart being pierced with the 7 swords for her Seven Sorrows recorded in Scripture: The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34-35); The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-21); The Loss of Jesus for Three Days (Luke 2:41-50); The Carrying of the Cross (John 19:17); The Crucifixion of Jesus (John 19:18-30); Jesus Taken Down from the Cross (John 19:39-40) and Jesus Laid in the Tomb (John 19:39-42). A Marian devotion arose in the Church in the 14th century around these 7 events, called the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows. The devotion is a reminder of the special place of Mary in our Redemption by Jesus Christ, and the intimacy Mary had with her Son in His Passion. This chaplet, using a special rosary of 7 decades, is used to meditate on the sorrows of Mary by praying an Our Father and 7 Hail Mary's while reflecting on each sorrow. Some begin each of the 7 sorrows with an Act of Contrition prayer to highlight the penitential aspect. Do you see anything else in the pattern that speaks of the Sorrowful Mother?

Fire Drill at Lord's Day Masses for 11/12 September
In a proactive effort to improve the safety of our church community, next weekend at the conclusion of all three Masses we will conduct a fire/emergency drill. The drill will help both the congregation and ushers to become familiar with what to do in case of an emergency. The drill will take place at the end of each of the three Masses. (If possible, the Lancaster Fire Department will be present.) The alarm will sound, and strobe lights will be activated. If you know you are particularly sensitive to this kind of stimulation, you may want to take steps to avoid the drill. Otherwise, everyone is asked to stay and participate in the drill so that as close to a real-life scenario can be achieved. Directions will be given at the time of the drill, but a couple of important things to remember are.
When the alarm sounds, move quickly picking up your belongings, do NOT stop to chit-chat. The majority of people should exit the church using the three doors on High Street. The Southside exit should be used by those who sit in the front pews because of mobility issues and their companions. The priest and altar servers will exit through the sacristy.
Fire House Park will be a meeting place for families should they become separated. Families should decide beforehand where exactly in the park you will meet. The idea is to get away from a building for your own safety and so the emergency personnel has unrestricted access. This drill is for all kinds of emergencies, not just fire. For both the drill and in the eventuality of a real emergency do not congregate in front of the church, at the side entrance, or in the yard behind the rectory; always move away from the building.
Ushers will be outside to collect worship aids and distribute the bulletins.

Stewardship of St. Mary of the Assumption
As part of the ongoing strategic process for Real Presence, Real Future, the Diocese of Columbus will be hosting Consultation Sessions for each parish throughout the Fall. The two sessions scheduled at St. Mary of the Assumption will be held in the Spirit Center on Saturday, October 16 and Saturday, October 23 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. The Consultation Sessions will be via Zoom videoconferencing. Facilitators will guide parishioners through important statistical and sacramental information relevant to the Diocese as a whole, to parishes in surrounding areas, as well as individual parish information. Parishioner participation in these sessions is critical to helping shape the future of the Diocese of Columbus.
The Parish Consultation Sessions are a vital part of the planning process that encourages parishioners to offer insights and perspective on the future planning of their parish. The feedback provided during these sessions will be used to draft new models for review by parishioners in early 2022. The consultation process will continue throughout 2022 until final models are approved. No decisions have been made regarding any parish, and none will be made until feedback is gathered directly from parishioners through the consultation process.
Every parishioner in the Diocese is encouraged to attend! Please plan to participate and invite others to do the same. Even if you are not able to participate, register anyway. All registrants will receive a link to the recording via email after the session.
