Rehabilitation Research News:
September 3, 2021

From the Director's Desk

Greetings. It’s been a very rough few weeks around the world and the country and within the rehabilitation community. I want to recognize the difficulty people may be experiencing due to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan; a number of natural disasters, including the earthquake in Haiti, wildfires in California, and Hurricane Ida; and the rise in COVID-19 cases as the delta variant spreads across the United States. It is with a heavy heart that I also acknowledge the passing of Dr. Alexander Dromerick, chair of Georgetown University Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Medicine Department and vice president for research at MedStar National Rehabilitation Network (NRH). He will be remembered as a caring clinician, a dedicated mentor, and a talented researcher. We at NCMRR extend our condolences to his wife and family. For more information, please see ACRM’s In Memoriam: Alexander Dromerick External Web Site Policy.

From the NINDS CDE Team

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), in partnership with NCMRR, recently assembled an external working group of experts to recommend a set of NeuroRehab Common Data Elements (CDEs) for use in clinical research.

These documents are now available on the NINDS CDE website from September 1-30, 2021 for feedback from the NeuroRehab research and practice community. We hope you will take the time to review the draft CDEs and provide your comments prior to the general release.

To access and review the CDE recommendations, please go to their NeuroRehab webpage.

Please feel free to review and provide comments on as many domains as you wish. We look forward to your feedback and ask you to please submit your comments by September 30, 2021.

The Blueprint MedTech program

Are you a center with expertise and experience in medical device translation?

The Blueprint MedTech program, an NIH incubator that supports innovators developing groundbreaking medical devices by accelerating the development of cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic neurotechnologies, is seeking proposals from academic and industry centers (“incubator hubs”) to coordinate and manage resources for the program. Centers that receive awards will help innovators build medical devices as close to the “final system” as possible. To support the most promising innovators, centers receiving awards will solicit, evaluate, and manage innovator projects and supplemental resources.
Awards are available for centers with broad expertise in medical technology translation and demonstrated experience and capability to support maturation from early-stage development through preclinical validation.

To learn more about this opportunity or to apply, please see Blueprint MedTech: Incubator Hubs (U54 Clinical Trial Not Allowed).

Do you have transformative technology that can improve diagnosis or treatment of nervous system disorders?

The Blueprint MedTech program is seeking applications from academic and industry applicants who have innovative early-stage technologies that aim to improve the diagnosis and/or treatment of nervous system disorders. Awards of up to $1,500,000 per year are available for the most promising and innovative neurotechnologies, to help support their development journey toward commercialization.

Awardees will have access to additional resources and support services including the following:

  • Planning resources to support concept development, team building, needs assessment, and other early translational activities
  • Streamlined access to translational services and expertise (e.g., design and prototyping, bench testing, large animal testing, biocompatibility assessment, manufacturing, medical monitoring)
  • Assistance from consultants (e.g., on regulatory, reimbursement, intellectual property, commercialization, and strategic partnership issues)
  • Advice from industry experts (e.g., meetings with an external oversight committee)

To learn more about these opportunities or to apply, please see the following announcements:

The first application due date for these opportunities is October 20, 2021, which is the only due date for U54.
