NIAGARA FALLS URBAN WALLS PROJECT
Niagara Falls Culture is pleased to present the new Street Art and Mural initiative “Niagara Falls Urban Walls”. This has seen the creation of an Artist Database, free mural workshops, street/mural art mentorship opportunities and is launching with official unveiling of the mural “Wish You Were Here” by Elaine Wallis and her team in Downtown.
Niagara Falls Urban Walls is an asset to our residents, communities and businesses. Street Art benefits urban environments by creating a safer community and encourages stewardship and public realm enhancement. Murals attract art loving pedestrians. Street Art is also an integral part of creating a safer community and supporting graffiti prevention.
Workshops delivered by Toronto’s Mural Routes this summer / fall  provide local artists with tips, tools and techniques to ensure that they can develop their skills and knowledge. There are further workshops this fall.
Niagara Falls Urban Walls Program will serve many functions. It will;
  • Enhance Niagara Falls’ streets and public spaces
  • Engage and vitalize Niagara Falls communities through physical enhancements and related events
  • Showcase local artists and mentor emerging talent
  • Counteract graffiti vandalism
  • Foster a greater sense of belonging among all
  • Celebrate the creativity of our rich and varied cultural communities

IMBIBE: A LECTURE SERIES - “A HOT, HELLISH, & TERRIBLE LIQUOR”: RUM & THE TASTE OF EMPIRE IN COLONIAL NORTH AMERICA
One of the first Europeans to taste rum, an English settler to Barbados named John Lingon, called the spirit “Kill-devil… a hot, hellish, and terrible liquor.” It wasn’t long, however, before his palate was in the minority.  By the 18th century, rum was not only considered indispensable for Christmas parties, evening routs, and pirate ships, it was a commodity that greased the wheels of Britain’s empire and fuelled the rebels who sought to destroy it in 1776.  From pantry to table-top, taverns to the top brass, this lecture will explore how colonial people (in both Canada and the US) drank, traded, and fought over Lingon’s terrible ‘rum-bullion.’
Renée Salhany is an associate professor of history at Brock University, who researches the history of drink, drinkers and the trouble they got themselves into, particularly during the War of 1812 era.

VOICES LOST IN CRISIS: ADULTS WITH IDD SHARE THEIR LIVED EXPERIENCE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) collaborated on a Photovoice project to explore their lived experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thirteen persons with IDD from across Ontario participated (including Niagara, Haldimand, Hamilton, Sudbury and Wellington regions). This two-part lecture series will review the emancipatory research methodology and results.  In part one, we will review the participatory action research process, where participants collaborated on the research questions, and learned to use a camera, take pictures, and use journaling to express their experiences throughout the pandemic. In part two, we will review the common and salient experiences. Participants will discuss their experience of loss and grief, social distancing and lockdown, missing friends, family, and work and the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health and relationships. They will also describe societal concerns related to ableism, inaccessibility, accommodations, and intersectionality, while demonstrating resilience in problem-solving, use of resources and technology, and looking for joy in the small things. In these lectures, we hope to raise awareness about the impact of the pandemic on the lives of persons with disabilities.
