New digital locum staff bank
A new digital locum staff bank for South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw has been developed and is available for use by practices.
Work is currently underway to set up all PCNs and Practices on the system and to get locums registered.
Set-up is very quick and easy (a 10–15-minute video call). Most practices simply email their rotas/gaps, and the team does the rest on your behalf.

Extended Access: Blood testing reminder
We have been informed by NHS England that we are to cease all non-essential blood tests until 17th September this is due to a global shortage of blood bottles. Therefore from Wednesday September 1st 2021 all appointments booked for blood tests in the Extended Access hubs will be cancelled. All patients affected will be contacted by PCS and informed to contact their registered practices. Booking practices will also be informed of the patient appointments that we have cancelled.
We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but as part of the co-ordinated response to a National problem this is beyond our control.

Extended access appointments – things to remember when making an appointment
Four things you might find useful to remember when making an appointment at an extended access hub.
1. For GP appointments in the cold hubs , all patients need to be triaged by a clinician prior to booking. The appointments at weekends can be booked up to 5days in advance. The clinical assessment, including an assessment of the patient’s Covid status, should be documented in the patient’s notes.
2. For hot-hubs all patients will be texted by PCS after you have booked the appointment, there is no need to send a text message via your practice systems as we will confirm location and arrival instructions in advance of the appointment directly with the patient.
3. Remember to ask all patients to bring a face covering with them to their appointment, unless they are in an excluded group.
4.For Nurse appointment for depo, B12 and dressings, the patients need to bring the equipment or medication with them

GP representation on long covid project
STH are currently working on the long covid programme in the city and are keen to have a good GP representation in there project group for further development. They are separately developing an ECHO programme for professionals which all GPs will have access to, but this representation will be about supporting the strategic direction and development of the offer for Long Covid across all communities.
Currently they meet very regularly about every 2-3 weeks, and also have a ‘big room’ which is open to anyone to join.

Pharmacy Service update
We contacted you at the start of the summer to let you know about the changes to our pharmacy service. Those changes, and the transfer to a model of direct employment of pharmacists and technicians by PCNs and practices has now been completed. We would like to thank the team for all that they have achieved over that time and wish them all of the best of luck for the future with their new employers.

Due to planned maintenance at Darnall Primary Care Centre the COVID-19 vaccine clinic on the site will be closed on Sunday 5th September. Service will resume as normal after this date.

Awareness and Beliefs About Cancer (ABACus) trial
Sheffield GP practices played an important part in the recruitment and delivery of the ABACus trial which has been accepted for publication in the British Journal of Cancer. The trial recruited adults aged 40+ recruited in community and healthcare settings in deprived areas of South Yorkshire and South-East Wales. The results of the trial showed that the ABACus Health Check is a viable low-cost intervention to increase cancer awareness in socioeconomically deprived communities.

Registering service development interests and expertise
As GP practices you came together to create PCS to do the things that you can't do alone. It's your organisation.
Our experience has shown that to deliver things the way you need them delivered we need to involve clinicians, managers and practice teams from the outset when services are being created.
Rather than wait until we have any specific project in the first stages of development, we would like to be pro-active and build up a register of those with an interest in future project development. So, if you have a specific area you are interested in then let us know so that we can contact you if input is needed in that area.
