Introducing Lab and Classroom Microphones
New Classroom Technology
As MRU returns to campus, we are excited to inform you about two new hardware features installed in labs and classrooms.
ELMO Document Camera
Some classrooms now include an ELMO document camera, replacing the Aver model. Document cameras give you the ability to show physical documents to your class, such as handwritten notes or diagrams, with options to capture the document as a photo or video. The camera also has a flexible arm allowing you to enable it as a webcam.
Click here to watch a tutorial on how to use the ELMO document camera.
Lapel Microphone
To help support instructors, while maintaining COVID-19 measures, each lab and classroom has been equipped with a lapel microphone. This allows you to project your voice while masked so your students don’t miss a minute of learning.
Click here to watch a tutorial on how to use the lapel microphone.

Using Google Slides for Quick but Meaningful Class Introduction
One alternative or supplement to verbal introductions is to have your students each complete one slide in an Introduce Yourself slidedeck, like this one (the slides are set for you to make a copy, so you can customize them for your class).
You can set time aside during a real-time class session, or ask students to create their slide ahead of time, but here are a few quick tips for making the introductions interesting and meaningful:
- Include your own introduction slide
- Include a prompt related to the big questions of your course.
- It is especially interesting to let students know you will revisit this activity at the end of term, when you will ask students to reflect on whether and how their views have changed.
- Make sure the “share” settings allow students to edit the slides!
