Learn More About Smoke Inspectors
Did you know that all residential real estate sales (and short term rentals) in Massachusetts require a smoke inspection prior to the sale or rental of the property?
In Newton, Newton Fire Prevention handles the inspections, and they have provided a helpful webpage so you can get your detectors up to code. Most other communities have their own respective webpages on the subject as well.
It is important to regularly check that your smoke/CO2 detectors are in working order. If you think you may sell your home in the next few years, it is a good idea to follow the webpage instructions to make sure all of your detectors are up to code, are the correct type, in the right locations and are under 10 years old. When you do sell your home each smoke/CO2 inspection costs between $50 and $150, depending on the type of property you have. If you fail an inspection you will have to make the necessary changes and pay another fee. Additionally, after a failed inspection it may take a few weeks to reschedule, potentially holding up a sale. Best to get it right the first time!
