Faculty Spotlight
Professor Henri Casanova received two grants from the National Science Foundation for developing 1) novel Cyberinfrastructure simulation technology and 2) novel runtime resource managements techniques using simulation.
Novel Cyberinfrastructure Simulation Technology
Prof. Henri Casanova, in collaboration with Prof. Rafael Ferreira da Silva at USC, has received a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for supporting a project entitled: “Simulation-driven Evaluation of Cyberinfrastructure Systems”.

UROP Program
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) will be accepting applications for Project funding (up to $5000 per individual, $10,000 per group) from September 9 to October 10, 2021 and encourages all undergraduate students from all disciplines at UH Mānoa to apply. UROP also accepts applications for Presentation funding (up to $2000 per individual, $4000 to $5000 per group) every month (UROP is only funding virtual presentations until further notice).
Please attend an online UROP information session on one of the dates via Zoom. UROP will be providing detailed information on funding opportunities, as well as updates on new training and research compliance requirements for funded students.

COE Career Day
It's time to get registered for this month's Fall 2021 virtual Engineering Career Day, arguably the most important event of the year at the College of Engineering! Note this is for ALL engineering students (freshmen through graduate level) and we highly encourage everyone to attend.

Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) designed a monthly series of mixers to give students the chance to meet, share ideas, and offer their unique skills to others. Many founders have met and forged relationships during these events. This is a casual and safe way to meet people, who may share similar interests and startup goals. The first event in the series will include a presentation by the Business Law Corps that will introduce basic legal knowledge that is helpful to first-time entrepreneurs. The first event will be held Friday, September 24, 2021.

Entrepreneurship Live Speaker
Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) is pleased to introduce the UH community to another set of diverse entrepreneurs in the Fall 2021 lineup of Entrepreneurship Live speakers. Each event features a founder's unique story and includes an audience Q&A session. We've invited Rechung Fujihira, founder of BoxJelly, to share his experience in opening the first coworking space in Hawaii in 2011 when the word "coworking" was a novel concept. The company provides a safe and supportive venue for entrepreneurs to connect and be productive.

Applications are open for classified UH Mānoa degree seeking students in enrolled in Fall 2021 and need financial assistance due to the impact of the pandemic. The amount awarded is $2,000. Deadline to apply is September 14, 2021 at 11:59pm HST.

Registration is now open for the 2021 UH Breakthrough Innovation Challenge. T his annual challenge provides students with a platform to share their bright ideas for solutions to our world's toughest problems, and encourages development of its commercial potential. Finalists receive dedicated business mentorship and thousands in cash awards.
Who should participate?
Students who want to develop an innovative idea that solves a big problem.
Students from all programs of study are encouraged to participate.
What is required?
Register and submit a 2-minute description of your idea in a video format. The deadline to register is October 3.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is once again accepting applications for the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) for Navy labs across the United States. This is a highly competitive program for college students who are U.S. citizens. Our Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific; niwcpacific.navy.mil) Hawaii office is one of the participating labs.
