Federal Grant to Democratize Data
We need your help to design the platform!

We don't normally share funding news here, but this is a big one! CI:Now has won a highly-competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health (OMH) to help people in Bexar County access and use data to reduce health disparities and inequities.
One of just two awards made nationwide, the three-year grant totaling $250,000 will allow CI:Now and its partners to integrate data on health outcomes with sub-county data on social determinants of health (SDOH) like income, education, and housing. The grant supports the design of an online data platform that makes it easy for both beginner and advanced data users to get the data. The grant also supports outreach, training, and technical assistance to help people understand and use the data. Learn more on our website or see the OMH press release.

The user-centered design sessions in January 2022 will let us hear directly from the community about what data/topics are needed, how they want the platform to look and function, what output (e.g., maps, charts, tables) they need, and what training or other assistance would help them use both the platform and the data effectively.

ALICE Data Added to Viz-a-lyzer

We've added new ALICE indicators to the Viz-a-lyzer! It's widely recognized that the Federal Poverty Level is really a measure of extreme poverty. It doesn't capture all the working people and families who make more than the Federal Poverty Level but still don't have enough to get by. The ALICE measure does capture those families who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. The Viz-a-lyzer now includes percent of households that are ALICE households, broken down by the three race/ethnicity groups available in that dataset: Black, Hispanic, and White. COVID-19 ZIP Code Data Updated
|

We've updated the case, death, and vaccination data in the COVID-19 scatterplot tool for ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), and we'll be updating this resource frequently over time. The hospitalization indicator has been removed from the visualization, as we've been unable to secure COVID-19 hospitalization data from local sources since November 2020.
Built using Shiny R, the interactive scatterplot shows the relationship at the ZIP code level between an indicator of COVID-19 burden and an indicator of community characteristics, such as population race/ethnicity, chronic disease, or unemployment. Each dot in the scatterplot is a ZIP code. The image above shows the positive correlation at the ZIP code level between COVID-19 case rate and percent of the population that is Hispanic or Latino.

We thought you might find this U.S. Census Bureau tool helpful to quickly see changes in population, housing units, and housing vacancy rate from the 2010 to 2020 Decennial Censes.
