Union Health Minister Urges States to Vaccinate All Teachers by September 5

Highlights

The Union Health Minister has directed states to prioritize the vaccination of teachers and also announced that 20 million additional doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be distributed to the states for this. The Health Minister has urged states to ensure all teachers are vaccinated by September 5, which is observed as Teacher’s Day.

Foundational Learning

The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has come up with a three-month long school preparation module for children in the 6-7 age group. It aims to impart basic number and language skills before the children begin formal school.

Policy and Governance

The Tamil Nadu State Council for Education Research and Training (SCERT) has prepared a curriculum for refresher classes for students of classes 2 to 12 as schools reopen from September 1. These classes are aimed at bridging the learning gap resulting from school closures due to Covid-19.
The Maharashtra government has proposed to include two additional subjects linked to agriculture as part of the syllabus in state-run schools. The School Education Minister said that the government is considering this since over 50% students studying in schools are located in the state’s rural areas, and belong to families involved in farming, the introduction of these subjects will be an opportunity for them to learn more about agriculture.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new scheme for teaching differently-abled children at their residences. The scheme also envisages conducting physiotherapy for them. The government will ensure trained therapists and special educators as a part of the scheme.

EdTech

The Kerala Chief Minister has announced that the government is taking steps to ensure all children can access online learning which include providing internet facilities, including in tribal hamlets, with the active participation of the general public.
The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has completed the piloting of the G-Suite online platform in 426 schools. This was introduced for the safety and privacy of the students and teachers. The new platform would ensure that no external person can enter any classroom and only students and teachers with their unique login IDs would be able to enter the platform.

Educators

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Union Ministry of Education (MoE) are aiming to equip students and educators from AICTE’s over 10,500 higher learning institutes with modern data analytics skills. For this, AICTE and MoE are partnering with analytics firm Tableau, who will provide desktops, Tableau Prep licenses, access to eLearning, and sample curriculum material.
Nearly three months after the Karnataka government announced compensation of Rs 5,000 each to teachers and other staff members in unaided schools across the state as part of its Covid-19 relief package, teachers and private school managements said they are yet to receive the amount. The General Secretary of the Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) said that they have written to the Chief Minister to expedite the process.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked all the principals of its affiliated schools to ensure completion of National Initiatives for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) courses by secondary level teachers as per the timetable shared by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

Schools

The Telangana High Court has put a stay on the state government's order to reopen educational institutions from September 1. The court said that no student should be compelled to attend physical classes. The high court's order was in response to a public interest litigation against.
An expert committee set up by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has recommended phase-wise reopening of schools in Delhi. The panel has recommended that schools be reopened for all classes but senior students be called in the first phase followed by middle class students and ultimately primary classes. The panel was tasked with finalising a detailed SOP, assessing preparedness of schools, vaccination of teaching and non teaching staff and addressing concerns of parents.
Schools in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore have set up vaccination camps on campus to ensure teachers and parents of students are vaccinated before schools reopen for classes 9-12. These camps were set up in 51 high and higher secondary government schools.
All government primary and upper primary schools, barring four, have been turned into smart schools in Ludhiana district of Punjab. These schools will provide technology-based teaching and aim to foster their holistic development. They also have a separate, spacious, airy and well-ventilated classroom for every section of class as per pupil-teacher ratio with a green and whiteboard.
