The members and alumni of the GYA urge governments, universities and scientific organisations to take immediate action to secure the lives and careers of Afghanistan’s scholars and students. A particular focus is necessary to protect women, children, and at-risk groups.

The GYA joins higher education associations, networks, and leaders in scholar protection to urge European governments and European Union institutions to take immediate action to secure the lives and careers of Afghanistan’s scholars, students, and civil society actors.

Mareli Claassens (University of Namibia) was awarded one of five Harvard LEAD Fellowships for Promoting Women in Global Health, a year-long program designed to advance the leadership skills of talented global health leaders from low- and middle-income countries committed to the mentorship of future women leaders in medicine and public health. Menna Elserafy (Zewail City of Science and Technology, Egypt) was elected to the Executive Committee of the African BioImaging Consortium, an initiative that seeks to grow the bioimaging community in Africa and connect researchers with a common interest in microscopy. As a GYA nominee, Pradeep Kumar (Wits University, South Africa) has been accepted to attend the InterAcademy Partnership Young Physician Leaders programme and the World Health Summit in Berlin, Germany in November 2021.
Sabina Leonelli (University of Exeter, United Kingdom) will be a featured speaker at the German National Academy of Science Leopoldina’s Annual Meeting in September 2021 "Biodiversity and the Future of Variety". Additionally, Sabina was awarded a year-long fellowship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Germany, from 2021-22.

GYA Constitution wording change
During the GYA's 2021 Annual General Meeting, members voted to change the GYA Constitution to better characterise members' countries of residence.
The previous wording employed the terms “developing” and “developed” to designate countries in the academy's voting procedure for Co-Chairs and further members of the Executive Committee (Sections 8.3, 8.4, 8.6).
The new wording of the GYA Constitution reflects the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee list of Official Development Assistance recipients.
Thus, rather than “developing” and “developed” countries, the GYA Constitution now uses the terms "low- or middle-income" and "high-income" countries for regular voting procedures of the General Assembly (Section 4.4.1).
This change will also be reflected in GYA correspondence and publications.

Second Online Young Academies Meeting
After last year’s successful online Young Academies meeting (read about it here), the GYA is now inviting Young Academies and similar initiatives from all over the world to participate in the second Online Young Academies Meeting on Thursday, 30 September 2021, from 11:00-13:30 UTC.
The meeting will help Young Academies stay connected, discuss joint projects, and also kick-start preparations for the 2022 Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies.

South Africa Young Academy of Sciences celebrates 10 years
During the recent SAYAS 10-year Anniversary celebrations, speakers included current GYA Co-Chair and former SAYAS Co-Chair Roula Inglesi-Lotz (University of Pretoria, South Africa), SAYAS and GYA founding member and former Co-Chair of both academies Bernard Slippers (University of Pretoria, South Africa), as well as former GYA and SAYAS Co-Chair Tolu Oni (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom).

“Impact of the pandemic on early-career researchers” - YAE survey results published in Nature
In summer 2020, a survey was initiated within the framework of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) and the CALIPER project about the situation of early-career researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this survey were recently published in Nature.
Climate Lectures by the German Junge Akademie
The German Junge Akademie is currently organising a series of lectures on climate change.
The fifth lecture in the series will take place online on 9 September 2021, at 16:00 UTC (in German).

Indonesian Young Academy celebrates 6th anniversary
The Indonesian Young Academy of Sciences celebrated its 6th anniversary and National Awakening Day in May 2021 by organising a series of webinars under the theme "Indonesia Developed Country 2045, What Do Scientists Say?"
The main message of this event was that Indonesia’s biodiversity is the key to transitioning itself from a natural resource-based economy towards a knowledge-based economy 100 years after the country's independence.
Philippine Academy of Young Scientists
The Philippine Academy of Young Scientists held its 16th Annual Meeting and Scientific Convention online in July 2021. With a theme of “#NewNormal: Moving Towards Smarter Education,” the event discussed the challenges brought on by the pandemic, as well as best practices in teaching and learning in the new normal. The organisation also elected their new Board, which will be led by President Windell L. Rivera.
GYA publishes toolkit to support Young Academy creation
Based on extensive discussions with members from the GYA and other Young Academies involved in setting up a Young Academy in the past, the GYA has published a Young Academy Toolkit to support early-career researchers the world over who are working towards setting up a Young Academy.
The toolkit collects information based on experience and best practices, and discusses potential challenges along the way. The document can be found on the “Establishing a Young Academy” page on the GYA website.

EASAC publishes Key Messages from European Science Academies for upcoming climate conventions
The Biodiversity Convention COP 15 in October 2021 and the Climate Change Convention COP26 in November 2021 are crucial moments for global policy-making.
Based on the joint work of the European Science Academies over the past 10 years, the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) has spelled out key science-based recommendations for those important meetings in the EASAC Commentary titled "Key Messages from European Science Academies for UNFCCC COP26 and CBD COP15".

Tsukuba Conference 2021
The purpose of the Tsukuba Conference is to bring together future shapers beyond all borders to facilitate discussion among them. Former GYA Executive Committee member Yoko Shimpuku (University of Hiroshima, Japan) co-organised the event, to which GYA members and alumni from around the world will contribute in various sessions. GYA alumnus Mitsunobu Kano (Okayama University, Japan) will be a speaker.
