DUG Network
September Urban
Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Shoutout to newsletter editor Maya Kraidman for her monthly contribution!

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these resources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

The Hunger for Justice Series
The COVID-19 crisis is exposing an enduring and extremely dangerous problem – the inequities within our food system. In honor of a global response, A Growing Culture (AGC) is announcing The Hunger for Justice Series, a weekly live broadcast about how we feed everyone in a Post-Covid World. AGC will showcase the stories and voices of our global network, highlighting local solutions to feeding the world on a changing planet. Each week, we will be hosting an hour long, candid conversation with activists at the frontlines of the global food movement. Themes like gender equality, farmworker rights, trade policy, seed patents, climate change, and land grabs will be explored through the lens of food sovereignty.

Racism in Policing: A Guided Course by the ACLU The systemic issues inherent in American policing are nothing new. While everyone deserves to feel safe in their own community, we know Black people in our country have been terrorized and killed at the hands of the police for centuries. It’s a reality that has led millions to finally follow the lead of Black organizers and Black-led grassroots groups by calling for change that goes beyond mere reform: to divest from police as an institution and invest in community-based, life-affirming programs and solutions. These are the issues the ACLU invites you to explore in our inaugural email course, “Racism in Policing” – a four-lesson series taught by our experts and sent to your inbox every week.

MAWDC Monthly Meeting
Sunday, September 5th from 11am
For our September meeting we're talkin' truffle with Oregon hypogeous fungi expert Dr. Michael "Caz" Castellano, who can be seen in the image here on a MAWDC foray in 2015. (Photo by Connie Durnan.) Truffles are widely abundant in the temperate forest here, but of no culinary value, and that's a real shame because culinary truffles' voluptuous aroma is truly sublime. It's no wonder they're the world's most expensive foodstuff. So I'm sorry to say, you'll still have to go to Italy to dig your own summer black truffles, but at least now, if you choose to do so, you'll be well informed on the secret lives of truffles.

Integrating Composting Into Your Farming Business with Ellen Polishuk
Tuesday 9/14 12:00 - 1:30 pm
Join the Million Acre Challenge for Session 2 of ILSR’s On-Farm Composting & Compost Use Webinar Series featuring Ellen Polishuk, biological farming consultant, educator, and co-author of Start Your Farm. This session will map out how farmers can add the production of high-quality compost to their operations. Over the course of 25 years, Ellen and her partners transformed Potomac Vegetable Farm’s Loudoun County farm from a 50-acre field of no-till sweet corn grown with herbicide and chemical fertilizer to a thriving, diversified organic vegetable operation. Compost that Ellen produced on-farm was an essential ingredient in this transformation. In this webinar, Ellen will detail the why, where, how, and when of adding composting to a farming business, including costs, equipment needs, tweaking compost recipes to help meet soil fertility needs, and how to apply compost. Join Future Harvest at Fawn Crossing Farms for an interactive field day on small scale livestock production! Farmers Bill and Sharon are raising a multitude of species, including heritage Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs for breeding, feeders and succulent meat. We will start the day with a farm tour focusing on the infrastructure - much of it designed and constructed by Bill himself - and focus on smart scaling, including an overview of how they decided breeding pigs along with the other animals was the best decision for their ten acre farm. We'll conclude the day with a group meal, details to be announced. IMPORTANT: Please wear boots/shoes that can be sanitized (sanitizer provided) if at all possible. Though we will have booties on site, biosecurity for animals is just as important as Covid-19 safety for humans! $10 for members, $20 for non-members, free for BFTP. REGISTER HERE.

Help Rescue Food for People In Need During COVID-19!
These are very challenging times for many, but one silver lining of all this is the many organizations and individuals who are working tirelessly to help those in need in their communities. Food assistance organizations are already facing higher demand for food. However, as restaurants close or alter their menus, events and catering orders are canceled, and offices are moving to 100% telework, there is a large amount of excess food that could be donated and needs to be placed with a food assistance organization very quickly. Food Rescue US- DC’s network of volunteers is ready to rescue that food and get it to the organizations who need it. Please, spread the word to restaurants, cafes, caterers, event spaces, offices, and any other businesses who may find themselves with excess food to donate that Food Rescue US - DC can rescue that food and make sure it gets to the right place. If you have food to donate or would like to volunteer to rescue food, you can:
