TIKANGA HAUMARU COVID RESPONSE PLAN

Nau mai, hoki mai koutou!

Welcome to Alert Level 3!!!   Big news for the week!!!

Whakarongotai Marae Vaccination Clinic

Together with Hora Te Pai ,we managed to confirm that Whakarongotai Marae is now a Vaccination Clinic.  We understand the barriers for whānau māori to be vaccinated and by bringing it to the Marae will help to bridge the mistrust and uncertainty about the procedure.  Whānau can korero freely in our whare and receive the correct information which will provide confidence in the somewhat scary process.  This will also help to generate putea for the marae during this lockdown period.

How to book:
Jump online to https://bookmyvaccine.covid19.health.nz/

OR

Telephone Hora Te Pai at 04 902 7095 or 0800 122 504.  If phoning – ask Kaimahi to book their appointment at Whakarongotai Marae.

Vaccination Days at Marae:
Tuesday 10am – 4pm
Friday 10am – 4pm

#CovidFreeOnKapiti

Awhi mai, Awhi atu:

Within this last week we have led a successful kai pack distribution to over 44 kaumātua across the Kāpiti Coast district, from Paekākāriki to Otaki.  For a small iwi we cover a large demographic across the Kāpiti Coast takiwā.  These distributions included Registered Iwi Members, taurahere and kaumātua associated with Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai.

There were also a small number of kai packs distributed to vulnerable whānau referred by the Māori Community Health Team at Hora Te Pai Health services; whānau that are Iwi registered.  All of our recipients were Māori.

We have allocated funds for a further kai roll out this week and will continue to monitor and observe the needs of our hapori.  This story and photo's can be found on our Manākitanga website page.

We would like to acknowledge the amazing team at Kaibosh Food Rescue who kindly donated kai for our packs.  Kaibosh is a kaupapa that work towards zero food poverty, zero food waste in Greater Wellington by making sure kai isn't discarded and is passed onto charities and community groups feeding people in need.

We also appreciated the support of our kaiawhina, Phil Waihi, Aunties Judy Anne Stewart, Wendy Smith, Claire Winiata-Rewi and her tamahine Charmaine & Kararaina, who packed and delivered our packs. Their benevolence made a gloomy day bright and we are receiving accolades for their mahi. Ngā mihi ki a koutou.

If you would like to be a kaiawhina, we would welcome any support especially if you're fully vaccinated, naumai haere mai!!!  Please contact Linda at admin@teatiawakikapiti.co.nz

Register with Us!

Feedback from our kaiawhina, some whānau need to update their personal details with us as it's a bit hoha delivering to Uncle Kua Ngaro!!!  So this is a great time to do a register drive!

If you have moved or changed your personal details please print this Registration Form and send it back to us.  We also noticed if your tamariki are over the age of 18, they should be registered, please encourage them to complete this form also.  The big draw card is that they will be able to vote and be able to enter our competitions or approach us for support.

Tikanga Haumaru Recipe Cards

We are designing Tikanga Haumaru Recipe cards which will be available on our website. These collectable cards will be designed to capture our marae style cooking/baking recipes that are affordable for whānau to make at home.

We kicked off this project with two baking recipes by our Nannies.  We would dearly love to receive other kuia/koroua signature dishes to add to our library.

So if you have a cost effective meal or any kai idea's please send them through to us. Hopefully Uncle Les accept the wero and share how he cooks his famous tuna.  We know there are some incredible steam pudding recipes out there too!  Please forward your recipes and a photo onto Janine at kaiwhakahaere@teatiawakikapiti.co.nz

Our website and facebook page is regularly updated and designed to keep whānau involved with our Tikanga Haumaru Plan with key information and alert details.

KORERO MANAHAU

We wanted to share a happy, he korero manahau moment with our iwi at this time.

Hari Jackson seen here on the left, with rugby pal, Ray Dennison, is holding a trophy for the Paraparaumu versus Rahui rugby game. Photo / David Haxton

Uncle Hari Jackson is a stalwart of Paraparaumu RFC and life memeber, he's the oldest living member.  A well-known and respected rugby man and he celebrated with his club winning the 2021 Premiership.  He recalls "I first played here when I was a 10-year-old school boy in 1946 and continued on through the years until I was 75 which was 10 years ago."

He is a proud Ngāti Puketapu and Ātiawa kaumatua, with a wealth of local knowledge.  We would like to congratulate him on such an amazing milestone and in being an inspiration and role model for our Iwi.

Father's Day Competition

Just in time for Father's Day, Sunday, 5th September, we have three prizes to WIN for three special Dads!!!

There's a copy of The survival of Māori by Matua Whatarangi WiniataDaphne Luke and two $50 gift vouchers donated by Te Rōpū Pakihi, our very own Kāpiti-Horowhenua Māori Business Network.

Write to us before 6th September 2021 and answer the following patai? Open to registered members only.

Your Dad is staying on Kāpiti Island for the weekend, what three (3) things would he take with him?

Fathers have always played a significant and loving role in the lives of their whānau.

Traditionally Fathers shared in the raising of their tamariki and dedicated a lot of time child rearing and were described as tender fathers.  The relationship between tane and wāhine was a harmonious balance which made for an ideal whānau picture.

As time moved on and due to colonisation family dynamics changed and we now live in a very different world today. We would like to mihi to all the super hero dads passed and present who continue to love and nurture their tamariki and raise the bar of adversity.  In some cases that could be mum, so we wish to keep the criteria open for this competition, so please feel free to submit your korero to us.

MAHI MŌ TE TAIAO: Waikanae Jobs for Nature Project

Introduction to Land and Conservation Management:

New Intake for 12-week Training Programme

“Ka ngahae ngā pī, ko Waikanae” “Staring in amazement, hence Waikanae”

I may have shared this opportunity with you earlier and am sending it out again to advise of the amended start dates for the two-day introduction and the actual programme start date.

We see this programme as a steppingstone into activating Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai (ĀKW) as Kaitiaki within our iwi rohe, so if you or someone you know is keen to develop their skills and knowledge around our Taiao, while receiving the living wage, then please share and get in touch!

Based on the experiences shared with this first rōpū of kaitiaki, the programme of training and work experience has been expanded.  The Waikanae Jobs for Nature project is an ambitious multi-year effort to restore the Waikanae River catchment that aims to build capacity within ĀKW and the Kapiti community and to achieve environmental integrity by implementing the six key kaupapa of Whakapapa, Wairua, Mana, Māramatanga, Te Ao Tūroa, and Mauri.

A vision of the project is to develop teams that can work across the rohe, helping to restore the awa, the ngahere, and ngā tamariki a Tāne that reside within.

The project aligns its values with those identified within the ĀKW Kaitiakitanga Plan, and a key focus is to support the development and experience across iwi kaitiaki to help with implementing our huanga to achieve shared outcomes for the restoration of the Awa.

Due to the current covid health restrictions we have reviewed our commencement dates for the following Taiao programme, and the changes are as follows:
