Q&A with the BCCS

During a one-on-one tour of the BC Cannabis Stores’ new Kelowna location, the oz. spoke to the BC Liquor Distribution Branch’s director of retail operations, cannabis operations, Kevin Satterfield.

He has decades of experience in retail, including with Best Buy and SportMart. Satterfield pivoted into cannabis about four years ago.

Here are some of the highlights from our Q&A...

On the store's overall look:

"When you first walk in, your immediate impression is ‘not what I expected from a cannabis store.’ It’s nice bright light colours; it allows you to be drawn into the store based on the cleanliness of the displays."

On the challenge of staffing:

"We’re very fortunate that 75% of the staff here are all transfers from other stores—Kamloops, Oliver, Vernon, Cranbrook—all transferred to be full-time regulars in the store."

On picking products:

"(We) take a look at the top sellers that are going through the wholesale department and we are able to take those same items and bring them into these stores."

On differentiating from the private stores:

"I’d probably say the breadth of stock that we carry is probably our biggest differentiator."

On being in competition with private stores:

"We go through exactly the same hoops that everyone else goes through—municipal approvals, provincial approvals—in order to open stores."

On finally opening in Kelowna:

"I’ve been working on this store for over two years, and going through lease negotiations, going through getting it ready, going through design, getting the tenant improvements done. It’s been a long time coming."

On the status with the store in West Kelowna:

"We put that on hold for right now. We’ll revisit it."

On plans for another store in Kelowna:

"Not yet. We’ve looked around other locations. We’ve got other markets we’re looking at closer to the Lower Mainland."

Orange Tingz by Pistol and Paris

The sweet aroma of two large sticky buds is lovely on the nose when opening Orange Tingz by Pistol and Paris.

One of my favourite offerings thus far has been Tangerine Dream—Orange Tingz is like a danker version of that consistently popular strain.

The high hits hard and fast, with 24.6% THC and 3.1% terpenes.

This Orange Tingz is a hybrid, a cross between Slurricane and TMAC. It’s high in Limonene (0.77), Trans-Caryophyllene (0.50) and Ocimene (0.49).

The moisture is also listed, at 10.6%.

This is quality stuff.

Originally bred by Mother Labs, it’s grown in Summerland by JBuds.

JBuds Craft Cannabis is an Indigenous owned and operated micro license holder. The family-run farm has 750 sq. ft. grow rooms in an indoor facility that can house 504 plants per room.
