ALIA news

ALIA's Online Storytime pilot has received an Australian Government RISE grant. This will mean that libraries, authors, illustrators and publishers will be eligible for grants to support online storytimes, with an emphasis on ensuring that literature is accessible to all children in Australia. First Nations authors and illustrators are also recognised with funding for ALIA to commission new children’s picture books by Indigenous creators. 

ALIA as a founder member of the National Early Language and Literacy Coalition (NELLC), has joined with nine partner peak bodies to call for the Australian Government to adopt a proposed national early language and literacy strategy

Following the phenomenal success of National Simultaneous Storytime 2021, next year's event will be held at 11am on 24 May 2022, with the book Family Tree. Written by Josh Pyke, illustrated by Ronojay Ghosh, and published by Scholastic Australia, this book is a heartfelt celebration of family, community, and the seasons of life to cherish and share. You can already start preparations for your 2022 event by registering your location and by pre-ordering the book.  National Simultaneous Storytime is supported by LIANZA, Scholastic Australia, Scholastic New Zealand and Cleverpatch. 

Media Literacy Week is coming soon, from 24-31 October, and there are plenty of ways that all libraries can get involved. Download the Media Literacy Week resources; use the ABC Education resources, and watch the recording from the Media Literacy Week preparation session

ALIA is proud to sponsor the very first library industry entry into the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022. Follow the link if you are interested in being involved with the project

Library staff who have undertaken ALIA's digital health literacy training program can now move into the next phase and run digital health literacy community programs in their libraries. If you have not yet participated in the program, you can now access the online training program.

ALIA has a number of upcoming events that you can contribute to and attend:

Register for the free EBSCO virtual showcase on Wednesday 29 September at 11:00am. 

Registrations have opened for the ALIA National Library and Information Technicians’ Online Symposium 2021.The latest keynote speaker announced for the virtual conference is Roxanne Missingham, University Librarian at the Australian National University where she leads a portfolio that includes libraries, archives, press, privacy, copyright and digital scholarship.

ALIA is seeking proposals for the ALIA National 2022 Conference that explore the theme of diversity. We want presentations on your libraries' successes, or struggles, in supporting diversity. Head over to the conference website for further information and to submit your proposal and direct any questions to events@alia.org.au. The deadline for submissions is 18 October 2021.

Learn if your library logo is working for you or against you. Queensland libraries were mentioned on page four of the McKell Institute report, 'Bridging the Digital Divide'. 

More than ten Local Government Areas in Greater Sydney and and regional areas are enrolled in the Libraries as Community Connectors program. For more information please contact librariesproject@plumtree.org.au


ACT

Libraries ACT’s lockdown mystery box delivery service was announced to immediate interest from the community. To celebrate spring, Libraries ACT has a series of videos with advice from Canberra gardener Tracy Bool including attracting wildlife to your garden, pruning, and preparing your garden for bushfires.  

Libraries ACT’s Too Busy Book Club, got off to a flying start online with almost 400 people joining the Facebook group in its first month. Chris Hammer’s forthcoming stand-alone release Treasure & Dirt has been announced as the October book for discussion. It also received praise in the 20 September ACT Health update. Listen from 15:24-16:28.


NSW

Richmond Tweed Regional Library has announced a partnership with the Regional Education Support Network to host a series of free online HSC workshops and seminars. 


NT

Nominations for the ALIA NT Recognition Award are now open. If you want to nominate a team or individual for the work they are doing in library services in the NT please complete the nomination form and return to awards@alia.org.au by 11 October 2021.


WA

Public Libraries WA will be hosting an online talk on Wednesday 29 September 6.00pm – 7.00pm (AWST) Kate Forsyth in conversation with Tess Woods. Bookings via TryBooking https://www.trybooking.com/BTRHI


VIC

The redevelopment of the Ballarat Library has hit the next phase; both Moorabool Library and Melton Library have been praised for supporting their communities during the pandemic; and construction has begun on a new Warrnambool Library.


TAS

In August, Libraries Tasmania opened the doors to a community-led exhibition showcasing items chosen by the public from the Tasmanian Archives, the State Library of Tasmania and the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts. The 91 Stories exhibition tells these much-loved Tasmanian stories. A selection of the items can be viewed in person at the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts (until 7 November 2021) and a digital exhibition of the full 91 items is available online. So far, this exhibition has proved immensely popular across Tasmania and further abroad, with the online exhibition being viewed more than 7,800 times. The longlists for the Liminal & Pantera Press nonfiction prize the shortlists for the Ngaio Marsh Awards; and the finalists of the Kirkus Prize; the winners of the 2021 Carmel Bird Digital Literary Award, the NSW Premier's History Awards, and the Age Book of the Year were all announced.

In the US, Hawaii State Public Library will require all visitors to be vaccinated or a recent negative COVID-19 test result. An article published in High Country News argues that investing in libraries is a climate justice issue
