Parent Bulletin

Autumn 2021

Dear Parents & Carers
I am delighted to write to you at the beginning of the new academic year.

I am pleased to report that most students have made a fantastic start to the new academic year.  Our Year 7s have settled nicely and got into the new routines for learning exceptionally well. The Y12s have also made an impressive start and have begun their post 16 studies with great enthusiasm and maturity.  I am particularly pleased to share that we have had a record number of students join the Sixth form this year which in turn is enabling us to offer a wider curriculum offer at Key Stage 5.
The staggered return this term has ensured a positive start to the academic year for the vast majority of students. The students are enjoying their full access to the school and the specialist areas which has significantly improved the learning experience in most areas, especially in the science laboratories.

Although we are still waiting to hear decisions from the DfE on this year’s examinations, we have started the year expecting them to go ahead so that we are not disadvantaging students in their preparations. We will make adjustments as and when the plans are published by the DfE and Exam Bodies.

The Heads of Year have recorded short presentations to outline their priorities for their year group which are on the school website here.  Please take the time to watch the relevant videos so that you are fully informed about your child’s learning plans this year.

Following the last two years of significant disruption we are approaching this new academic year with great optimism.  We are determined to provide the best possible learning experience for all students and we are keen for students to make good use of the extra-curricular programme on offer.  Please encourage your child to attend at least one the many clubs and study sessions running this term.

Thank you for your continued support for the school in our aspirations for all students.

With very best wishes,
Kam Grewal-Joy
Headteacher

A Level results success!

The 10th of August was our year 13 result day; we were lucky enough to be able to welcome the students into school to collect their results and the atmosphere on the day was fantastic.
This year group have shown a fantastic amount of resilience in the face of an incredibly difficult 2 years and are now ready to face the next stage of their educational journeys.

61.6 % of students achieved A*-B and for the third year in a row we achieved a 100% pass rate. 84% of students who applied placed at their first-choice university.

There are too many success stories to be able to mention them all, however some notable achievements include:
Jack Coddington A*A*A History, University of Sheffield
Millie Crockford A A*AA* EPQ Biology, University of Sheffield
Joe Gray A*A*A* Maths, University of Leeds
Miriam Levy A* A* A A* EPQ Law, University of Sheffield
Alex Oates A A A Civil Engineering, Liverpool John Moores
Ashleigh Wilson  A*A*A* Computer Science with Mathematics, University of Leeds

We look forward to welcoming year 13 students back into the sixth form center for their A Level Certificates evening in December. On behalf of the students and the sixth form team I would like to thank all the teachers and support staff who contributed to these outstanding results.

COVID-19 Test Centre

To help support a safe return to school for all students after the Summer holidays, the School re-opened the asymptomatic testing centre. During the week the staff and testing volunteers completed 2,813 tests which helped to identify 11 asymptomatic positive cases, which were subsequently sent home to complete a PCR Test and to isolate, until the PCR results were received. Under new government guidelines, close contacts of students no longer are required to isolate, so finding these 11 cases early, helped keep the school safe and the risk of transmission low.

The school has now restarted the home testing process and new Lateral Flow Tests have been provided to all students. We are asking every student to complete a home test twice a week, on a Monday & Thursday morning. Alternatively, if time is short in a morning, then tests should be completed on a Sunday & Wednesday evening. All results must be reported to the NHS as well as to the School. Full guidelines on how to report your results are available on the schools website.

Work with Universities
At Meadowhead, we work closely with a range of universities, employers and further education providers. In particular, the Universities of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam provide a wide range of activities, trips and sessions to our students as part of the HEPPSY project (Welcome to the Hepp South Yorkshire Plus programme | HeppSY (shu.ac.uk)). As part of this close working, we usually share some student information with the universities. Please see below the privacy notice that includes the details we share with the two institutions. If you have any concerns or would like your child’s data not to be shared with the universities, please email David Sheppard, Assistant Headteacher – Student Development: sheppardd@meadowhead.sheffield.sch.uk.
