ART, ECOLOGY AND THE COMMONS: TOGETHER IN AGONY WE PERSIST

ملاذ: واحة تشاركية لتجاوز الشقاء معًا

FRIDAY, 27 AUGUST - SUNDAY, 5 SEPTEMBER 2021
Beirut’s RiverLESS Forest, Sin el Fil, Lebanon

We launched #AEC #ملاذ last Friday,
and it has been nothing short of magical...

On opening night, the forest was packed with so many friendly faces, some familiar and others new. You told us how you fought to find fuel, you biked and even walked to make it, and we are overjoyed. We have since watched Jumana Manna’s beautiful film Wild Relatives and Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov’s heartbreakingly powerful Honeyland with so many of you, we have explored artistic interventions in and around the forest, and cozied up at the Bossa Nova Hotel across the street for a meaningful lineup of video art films. Many have stopped their cars by the forest to ask us about our activities, only to show up to take part later.

Beirut’s RiverLESS Forest has been feeling like a gathering space, a place to share meals, discussions and stories of survival in Beirut…

THANK YOU for the energy and for proving that despite these critical times, we can and need to come together, because only together can we persist.

In collaboration with
theOtherDada, this program is supported by the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the French Institute, Culture Resource (Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy) and the Goethe-Institut Lebanon.

A massive thank you to our allies on the ground, keeping us going in every way: our wonderfully committed volunteers, Advanced Car Rental for the rides, Bossa Nova Hotel for our second base, Metropolis Cinema for our forest screenings, Light for Lebanon for lighting our forest; Bread Republic, Jai KitchenNation Station and Rim Water for giving us much-needed energy, and of course, the Municipality of Sin El Fil for the continuous support.

Study is What We Are Doing Together

Some of you may have already met our Study participants at some of the public events. Despite the conditions, Ashraf, Christian, Mirna, Petra, Raafat, Rana and Pascal have been breathing life into our forest and city.

We hiked the forest of Abadiyeh on Sunday with botanist Khaled Sleem to collect soil at the foot of the tallest tree there, we used it to prepare compost tea for our new trees and shrubs which we then planted in our forest on Tuesday with children from Horshna Forest School.

We have had countless meals together in between, have been exploring each other’s work, have met and visited other artists and collectives and are tirelessly plotting what’s to come. The discussions have been heated, the exchanges invaluable and the energy invigorating.

TAP needs your support.

TAP (Temporary Art Platform) is a nonprofit organization committed to making another world possible, by affecting social change through contemporary art. Founded in a region of unrelenting volatility and absent cultural policies, TAP curates the conditions for communities, private bodies and governmental institutions to recognize that contemporary artists can be allies in driving enduring social change amidst precarious contexts. In the process, TAP creates accessible tools and production opportunities for contemporary artists, whilst rendering their practice porous and participatory, within and beyond the field of art.

We have been facing an unprecedented deficit, threatening the sustainability of our institution since the beginning of the global and Lebanese economic crisis. We are however committed, more than ever, to making another world possible, by mediating exchange and prompting the unexpected.

No donation is small.
Become a TAP supporter so that we can persist with wonder, and without compromise.
