Once again I hope this newsletter finds you well and in good health and spirits.

COVID/VACCINATION - #1 hot topic is COVID and vaccination status as it relates to employment. Earlier this month I put out a letter that read in part, “Please understand that neither Ironworkers Local 433 nor our signatory contractors are mandating vaccinations for all members. That is a personal decision each member will make which we respect their right to make.” I do not believe that I could have made it any clearer regarding the Local’s stance on the issue. However, outside of our control there are entities that are requiring vaccinations on their projects. Whether it is the owner, general contractor, or some other overlord that requires vaccinations, our signatory contractors will be contractually obligated to provide vaccinated workers on these projects.

44^TH IRONWORKERS CONVENTION – President Dean’s message was very clear throughout the Convention on a couple items... 1) Get vaccinated 2) Grow or die! As a Local, in 2020 our numbers were up in membership and hours… even through COVID. Kudos to you all for showing up and delivering!!!

PENSION INFORMATION – In the previous newsletter I stated that, “May 2021 Trustee meeting we received a report from the Pension Trust actuaries that stated as of May 31, 2021 our Pension funding is at 97.4%.” Well… after all the numbers were crunched it appears that we are going to be even better! Certification will come in at 98.7%. So we are definitely on track to hit 100% by May 31, 2022 and we might even hit 105%, which releases another $2.00 from the Pension to the Annuity or Health and welfare. Stay tuned for more information.    

ALLOCATION INFORMATION – There is a Zone 4 allocation of $2.25 effective January 1, 2022. The Zone 3 Allocation will be $2.35. There is nothing etched in stone as it relates to the appropriations of these numbers so please reach out to your favorite BA and let them know where you would like these monies placed.

Hope you all had a safe and reflective Labor Day holiday.  Without question the most significant holiday to Union Members, Labor Day is an important time to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices that all Union Members make daily to ensure that we are all paid a fair wage for our skilled labor.

The Antelope Valley and Southern Kern County area continues to thrive with the continued push for Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Power.  One of the more significant upcoming PV Solar projects is the 600MW Aratina Solar Project in Kern County.  Through the efforts of over 100 of our Local 433 Ironworkers, we were able to influence the Kern County planning commission into moving forward with the project under a Project Labor Agreement (PLA), ensuring that all work will be done by Union Labor.  There was significant pushback from local Kern County residents (30+ in attendance and over 400 signatures on a petition to stop the project) and without the efforts of those Ironworkers in attendance, this project could very well have been dead before it got started.  I appreciate all those who helped in getting this project approved by the commission.  Your efforts do not go unnoticed.  You each had a hand in putting 80-100 Union Ironworkers to work for more than a year beginning Spring 2022.

On August 10^th, 2021, the United States Senate voted to approve a $1 trillion Infrastructure Bill.  The bill earmarked $110 billion for repairs/renovations to roads and bridges and $25 billion for airports, creating opportunities for Union Ironworkers all over the United States.  We will remain vigilant in pursuing these opportunities as they apply to Local 433 Members. 

In closing, with federal focus on renewable energy and infrastructure, the future looks as bright as ever for the Antelope Valley and South Kern County area.

Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
 

The 4^th quarter is here and with that we will see an increase in work and with work comes man hours that continues to shore up our percentages with our increasing pension, that when certified this coming 2^nd quarter we will see a dollar get allocated toward our annuity and start working towards 105% funded goal.

For the Inland Empire and the consistent efforts in unifying with Labor Council and Building Trades to obtain CWA’s and PLA’s to fortify those man hours with future work,  is very important, as we have had current victories in Palm Springs, Moreno Valley, Ontario Airport, Kaiser/Riverside, Coachella Arena and even a State Agreement with Wind Turbines and looking ahead in cities such as Riverside and San Bernardino.  These Efforts can’t be obtained alone, partnerships are vital and participation makes a big difference and with that I would like to give a big THANKS to our members and their families in the Inland Empire that are continuously showing up and volunteering when called upon with various Planning Commissions, Water Boards, public comments at City Halls, and much more.  We couldn’t do it without your dedication and the lens you see our future through, good job and thanks again!

How many of you are familiar with the Iron Workers Political Action League (IPAL) and the purpose it serves the Iron Workers membership? The objective of IPAL is to increase the political and legislative influence of the Iron Workers. The success of electing pro-union and pro-worker candidates to public office, as well as advocating on behalf of the Iron Workers, and lobbying legislation that critically affect the livelihood of the members and their families greatly depend on your contributions. To excel in the 21st century, the Iron Workers must continue to build political power by increasing membership, raising funds via the IPAL contribution and becoming politically active. Anti-union politics must be recognized as a serious threat, but by building power amongst ourselves we can accomplish to supersede this critical challenge. As a member of this union, you should consider how your contribution can significantly impact IPAL and help achieve the goals at hand. By contributing $200 annually, you are participating in attaining so much for our union and solidifying our presence in the political arena. You have the opportunity to take a stance and make a difference for your benefit as well as that of your brother and sister Iron Workers. You can make this contribution at the Union Hall, or you may mail in a check to our International headquarters in Washington D.C. Should you remit your contribution to our headquarters directly, please inform the staff at the Union Hall so that your name may be reflected in the newsletter and on our website. It really is that simple!
