September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Through access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their interests and passions.

Libraries, including DCLD, offer everything from early literacy programs to virtual homework help, helping transform lives and communities through education. At DCLD, you’ll find a wide variety of educational resources and activities, including story times, language learning resources, school and career training, and trusted research databases.

DCLD, along with libraries everywhere, continue to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community with services such as Device Advice and Makerspace offerings. To learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit the library’s website. To sign up for a library card, bring a photo ID and proof of address to your local branch.

Interlibrary Loan Delivery

The service which delivers interlibrary loans throughout the state of Iowa, IA Shares, has increased its deliveries from once to twice a week. This should speed up delivery of materials borrowed from other libraries.

If you are looking for an item that is not a part of our collection, consider submitting a request for it to be borrowed from another library in Iowa. Rather than purchasing every requested item, material sharing is an efficient way to provide materials to our patrons which may not have broad appeal or are old, out of print, or otherwise difficult to find.  Request an ILL at any branch or through our online catalog’s link to the State of Iowa’s ILL service, SILO. You will need to set up a SILO account to make a request.

Friends of the Library Raffle

The Friends of the Dubuque County Library District’s annual fundraising raffle continues!

Purchase a ticket at any of the branches– Asbury, Epworth, Holy Cross and Peosta/NICC through October 30. Tickets are $1 each or purchase 6 tickets for $5. One ticket equals one entry to win the prize of your choice. Prizes this year include a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 tablet with case, a signed Green Bay Packers football, and a 65” JVC Smart TV. Winners will be drawn on October 30th.

In-Person Programming Returns

This month, DCLD program staff are bringing back in-person programming including the popular programs such as Lego Explorers and Craft Club, alongside presentations such as the Miss Iowa Storytime and Genealogy Basics with Linda Betsinger McCann. Storytime will be taking place outside in parks in all five townships, except Peosta, where Miss Teresa will meet you in the circle room at the center of the library.

We are not currently requiring masks to attend our programs, but we will be limiting the number of attendees for most events to allow for social distancing. To help with this, we are requesting registration for most programs. Please refer to our September calendar and Facebook page for more information on specific events.
