Events
The modernization of Antarctica’s McMurdo Station
Tuesday, September 14, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Join OZ Architecture principal Rick Petersen as he discusses the firm's redesign of McMurdo Station, Antarctica, a scientific research center at the bottom of the world. Currently, a 65-year old station serves as the primary logistical hub for the National Science Foundation's Polar Program, supporting inquiry across 5 realms of science. The focus of McMurdo's modernization is the improvement of resource efficiency and to support the wellness and well-being of up to 1,200 researchers living and working in the driest, coldest, windiest place on Earth. Boulder Forum on Economy, Climate and Community
Boulder is hosting a unique online discussion about the role of the economy in both climate change and ultimately climate stabilization. Drawing on leaders in fields central to solving both the climate crisis and a series of interrelated crises—energy systems, material economy/consumption, ecosystems and biodiversity—the webinars will underscore the focus on the role of the economy in driving these crises as well as its potential role in their solutions. Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) welcome event
Wednesday, September 15, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

People of all genders are invited to the WiSE welcome event to, first, introduce/reintroduce WiSE as a CU student organization and the current leadership team and, second, spend time connecting with current and new WiSE members! Lunch will be provided, and WiSE-related party favors/door prizes, lawn games, and ample outdoor space/time will give you a chance to connect with folks with an interest in supporting and learning about Women in STEM fields.

Want to learn about or connect with others interested in outreach and community-engaged research, teaching and creative work? Faculty, staff and students are invited to drop in anytime and invite their colleagues to these informal community-building opportunities. Coffee & Conversations is a fun way for attendees to connect with others from across campus, including staff from hosting groups Office for Outreach and Engagement and CU Engage, while they also learn from one another and generate informal conversation about key topics related to working with communities external to CU Boulder. CU Theatre & Dance partners with Climate Change Theatre Action 2021 in New York City to produce ten brief climate plays by authors from around the world interspersed with fun Cabaret-style musical numbers. Humor, passion and imagination are put to work envisioning an equitable, survivable and thrive-able future for all life and the ecosystems upon which life depends. Performance is captioned, signed, and wheelchair-accessible (with parking and companion seating available); service animals welcome.
Creative (climate) communications for a better world
CU on the Weekend
Saturday, September 25, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Talk will take place on Zoom.
Conversations about climate change at the science-policy interface, and in our lives, have been stuck. During this CU on the Weekend lecture, Max Boykoff will highlight dimensions of his book Creative (Climate) Communications that integrate lessons from social sciences and humanities to more effectively make connections through issues, people, and things that everyday citizens care about. He argues that a "silver buckshot" approach is needed, where strategies effectively reach different audiences in different contexts leading to more meaningful, substantive, and sustained responses to contemporary climate challenges. This approach can help to effectively recapture a common ground about climate change in the public arena, increasing our engagements to more effectively meet the scale of present and future climate-related challenges. Life in the Plasticene exhibit
Now through October 3
Arbor Institute, 1708 13th Street, Boulder
This exhibit integrates art, ecological science, and storytelling to explore the merging streams of life and plastic worldwide. From microplastics in Colorado streams to cattle foraging for food amongst the plastic waste in India, the exhibition asks: “how did we get here, and where do we go from here?" Photography, films, artifacts, and interviews spark connections, curiosity, and creative thinking. Featuring the work of NeST Fellows Patrick Chandler and David Oonk. The Carillon at Boulder Creek - speaking opportunities
The Carillon at Boulder Creek is a senior living community seeking presentations for residents on a wide variety of sustainability or science topics, from geology to waste to renewable energy to anything else that folks are studying. Do you, or your students, need to give presentations for a course? Are you developing a public-interest talk on a passion project? This is a great chance to speak for 45 minutes to an hour with an enthusiastic, interested general audience (and, I might add, regular voters). UROP Sidewalk Symposium

UROP (the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) invites undergraduates at any stage of their project timeline to participate in this year's Sidewalk Symposium by creating colorful visual presentations of their projects using nothing but chalk. Nature webcast features Green Labs' Kathryn Ann Ramirez Aguilar
Check out this Nature webcast on how to green your labs and lower the environmental impact of your research, featuring CU Green Labs program manager Kathryn Ann-Ramirez Aguilar. She champions efficient use of space, reducing waste, and saving costs as part of more sustainable lab processes. Namrata Jain of the nonprofit My Green Lab and Cintia Milagre of São Paulo State University, also speak to their experiences running green lab programs.
