Assalamu alaykum,

We have 7 updates to share with you in today's newsletter:

(1) AMA Public Health Neighbourhood COVID-19 Vaccination Hub:  AMA is facilitating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic every Monday - Thursday for Ottawa residents.

(2) Albayan Qur'an School: our Qur'an school is opening up registration for children 6 - 14 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and sisters only (Sunday mornings).

(3) Bookclub for Boys: a new exclusive program for youth ages 13 - 17.

(4) Social Gathering for Seniors: AMA welcomes our beloved seniors to an afternoon of building community ties and connecting with the masjid on September 4.

(5) Qur'an Class for Converts: dedicated to help converts learn the basics of Arabic and the Holy Qur'an.

(6) Henna Workshop: learn the traditional art of henna while having fun!

(7) Educational Workshops: we have organized a series of educational content to benefit youth. Programs include a: Science Workshop, The Art of Effective Listening and Reading and the Homework Club.

#1. AMA Public Health Neighbourhood COVID-19 Vaccination Hub

AMA will be facilitating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic every Monday - Thursday for Ottawa residents.

This program is to help reduce barriers for residents who have not yet received the vaccine. The hubs will work with community leaders to promote a comfortable, convenient, and easily accessible option for vaccination, as another step towards the goal of ensuring that anyone 12+ in Ottawa who wants a COVID-19 vaccine can get vaccinated.

You're eligible to receive the vaccine if you satisfy the following criteria:

  • First doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 12 years of age or older at the time of vaccination
  • Second doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 12 years of age or older who received their first dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 28 days before their appointment. Residents who received their first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine can receive an mRNA vaccine after 56 days

Here are the details for the pop-up vaccination clinic:

Date & Time: Every Monday - Thursday from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Please note: The clinic will be closed on September 9 only.

Appointment Type: No appointment is required to receive a vaccine or to speak with a Public Health nurse about COVID-19 vaccines 

If there is a waiting period, residents may receive an appointment card with a time to return to the clinic for their vaccine.

Vaccination offered: Pfizer-BioNtech and/or Moderna 

Location: AMA Community Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 2P1)

Items Required: One piece of government identification. This includes:

  • Health Card
  • Driver's License
  • or Passport

#2A. Albayan School 1 for Boys & Girls (Tuesdays & Thursdays)

Here are the details for our Albayan Qur'an school for the upcoming school year:

Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays starting from September 14 – June 23

Time: 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Ages: 6 – 14 

Location: Virtual via Zoom

Cost: $300 per child. Payments can be made in installments with $150 in September and $150 in January.

**Please be advised that registration in not complete until payment is received.

Registration: For the student to ensure a place in class, please send an e-transfer to info@amacanada.org with the Guardian’s name & child’s name included in the note.

#2B. Albayan School 2 for Girls (Sunday Mornings)

This program is exclusively for sisters. Whether you are just starting to learn Qur’an for the first time or you are an advanced student, we will help you on your journey to completing the memorization of the entire Qur’an.

Dates: Sundays starting from Sept. 5 – June 26

Time: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Location: Virtual via Zoom

Cost: $200 per child for the whole year (includes the course book).

Student Download: Parents are requested to download the Bidayah book for free by clicking here.

Levels: 

  • Level 1/2 for Beginners
  • Level 3 for Intermediate
  • Level 4/5 for the last 5 Juz
  • Level 6 for Juz Amma to Ahqaf

There is also a new halaqa for university students.

Registration: For the student to ensure a place in class, please send an e-transfer to info@amacanada.org with the Guardian’s name & child’s name included in the note.

#3. Book Club for Boys

We are pleased to offer a virtual Book Club for Boys (ages 13 – 17) for young readers at home!

The first book covered is The Productive Muslim by Mohammed Faris.

Once this book is covered, the following works will be shared via e-mail or available for pick-up depending on the COVID-19 restrictions. Do not miss out on this opportunity to connect with new friends in a fun and learning environment!

Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Ages: Boys ages 13 - 17

#4. Social Gathering for Seniors

AMA is pleased to invite our seniors for a social gathering in the AMA Garden with refreshments. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends and the masjid after a long pause due to the pandemic.

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, September 4

Time: 3:00 PM - Asr Prayer

Gender: Both Genders Welcome

Cost: Free

Location: AMA Garden (Behind the Mosque of Mercy)

Registration Deadline: Please register by 11:59 PM on Friday, September 3, to help our team organize ample refreshments for the event

Note: We will be strictly applying all COVID-19 health guidelines for everyone’s safety. Everyone is required to wear their masks and observe social distancing.

#5. Qur'an Class for Converts

AMA is pleased to offer Qur'an classes for converts.These classes are designed to teach Beginner level Arabic and Qur'an for new converts to Islam. Classes are separated by gender.

Time: 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Cost: Free

#6. Henna Workshop

Join us for a fun artistic activity and learn how to design a temporary henna dye on the hands and arms. Henna body painting is a common custom around the world that is used for the celebration of special occasions.

Ages: 12 - 18

Location: Zoom

#7A. Science Workshop for Youth

Science is one of the most important channels of knowledge; responding to societal needs and global challenges. This interesting workshop for youth teaches problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Participants will be invited to join a Kahoot Trivia near the end of the program.

#7B. The Art of Effective Listening and Reading

AMA is offering a presentation for youth and young adults to enhance their ability to understand and communicate better, ultimately leading to better relationships with family, friends and co-workers.

Participants will also be invited to participate in a Kahoot Trivia game.

Time: 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Ages: 13 - 25

#7C. Homework Club

AMA Community Centre has launched a free homework club for youth between Grades 4 – 12. This is the first homework club in the Sawmill Creek-Emerald Woods neighbourhood.

This free program is open to residents from all faiths and backgrounds. Our tutors can provide homework support in English and French.

Here are the details:

Time: Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 7:30 PM throughout the school year*

*Except for OCDSB holidays

Grades: 4 – 12

  • Grade 4 – 8 students will be from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Grade 9 – 12 students will be from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
