Welcome back to a new semester, Sloss community!

Letter from the Directors:

We are thrilled to be welcoming you back to a new semester on campus. This one is particularly special for us because we’re also celebrating 40 years of the Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity at Iowa State University.

This fall, as we look back on 40 years of the Sloss Center, we’re highlighting ways in which the Sloss Center has contributed to Iowa State’s campus over the decades and looking forward to ways in which we can continue to build on progress made. We want to recognize the visionary voices of the women who advocated for a women’s center on campus in the late 70s, asking for a space where “women’s issues” would be centered and addressed year-round and not only during women’s history month. To learn more about the founding days of the Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity, tune in to our first Feminist Friday of the semester on Sep. 10th with Sloss Center director, Dr. Sandra Marcu.

As we continue to build on the legacy of the past four decades, our staff is committed to continue to provide resources, programming, and advocacy to support all women. We are also commited to continue to provide resources, programming, and support that appreciates, acknowledges, and advocates for gender expansive, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, transgender, and nonbinary people and lives and all the intersections of identity that we hold, need, and create space for. We welcome you to join our events, talk to our staff, check out the Sloss House, and get involved with our work

Our staff is excited to connect with you in person and virtually as we continue to navigate the pandemic and strive for a healthy and joyful semester ahead. Thank you for your support; your involvement with our center is what keeps us thriving, learning, and advocating. In the words of iconic lesbian Black feminist poet Audre Lorde, “without community there is no liberation.”

In community,
Dr. Sandra Marcu (she/her), Director
Andra Castle (they/them), Assistant Director

QTPoC is an acronym for Queer and Trans People of Color.

We determined that a space centering QTPoC, outside of the predominately white environment of the larger LGBTQ+ community is needed. As QTPoC, we have to navigate structural racism as well as homophobia and transphobia. This shared experience is our motivation in bringing the QTPoC community at ISU together for a monthly meal to center us and the needs of our community.

Join QTPoc at their Welcome Back Dinner on Friday, September 17 from 5:00 - 7:30 PM at the Lockwood Cafe (4625 Reliable Street, Ames, IA, 50014). Dinner will be "buffet style" with drinks.

To be added to the QTPoC listserv, please contact rrowe@iastate.edu

ISU SISTER

Logo for ISU sister to represent community building. Logo is in the shape of a circle with a head shape to represent a woman of color and humans holding hands in a semicircle around it.

ISU SISTER (Supporting Inclusive Spaces Together Through Experiences and Recognition) seeks to create an inclusive, supportive space for faculty and staff who identify as women of color (WOC) through a sister circle framework. Providing space and programming that is affirming, positive and uplifting, will allow WOC working at a predominantly White institution (ISU) to share their experiences.

Ultimately, this collective will enhance the quality of life for participants by increasing their ability to create a shared community where they are accepted and validated. This group is open to faculty and staff that identify as women of color. We proudly welcome women who are cisgender, trans, of trans experience, gender queer women, and non-binary people who female-identify.
