Updates and Special Notices

SPECIAL NOTICE: All Exercise Participants - Recent public health conditions along with feedback from current class participants have caused us to rethink our plans for the fall session. We will be offering classes through Zoom, rather than in-person, for the upcoming session which runs from September through November. Please re-confirm your registration, even if you have previously registered for this session. Once we have 7 confirmed participants for a class, we will provide the mailing address for you to send payment to your instructor. If you have questions or concerns, please call Joan Ingersoll or Myriam Fleurimond at 978-371-2895.

SAVE THE DATE: Flu Shot Clinic - The Carlisle Board of Health will be holding a drive-through flu vaccination clinic (residents age 65+ only) on Friday, October 1, 2021 between 10:00am-12:00pm at St. Irene Church. The vaccine will be provided and administered by Walgreen’s and both high and regular dose vaccines will be available. Walgreen’s will handle the billing and there will be no cost to you. There will also be a homebound registration list. Call the COA for details and registration.

SPECIAL NOTICE: Carlisle COVID-19 Anthology Project Invitation - Help create an anthology of stories reflecting how one small community experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. This book will serve as a historical record and a time capsule, capturing what life was like for our townspeople during this unique time, told in your own individual voice. Friday, September 10 Cognitive Changes in Parkinson's and Functional Strategies to Support the Patient and Caregiver - 1:00pm via Zoom - Sponsored by Emerson Hospital - Courtney Robinson, MS, CCC-SLP will discuss changes in memory, attention, language, and executive function. She will also provide functional tools to support cognition to increase independence, quality, and safety. Link here to register.

Monday, September 13 Podiatry Clinic - By appointment 41 North Road Suite 202, Bedford - Dr. Ayleen Gregorian - Appointments will run every 15 minutes. The Clinic fee is $40; Carlisle seniors only pay $25 because of the generosity of the Friends of the Carlisle COA. Make your check payable to Dr. Gregorian. Monday, September 13 Senior Moments - 10:00am Ferns - A casual coffee drop-in for Carlisle residents & friends 60+ to sit, relax and chit-chat. FREE pastries provided by the Carlisle COA and Bridges by EPOCH, Westford. Ferns gives 10% off coffee to Senior Moment attendees.
 
Monday, September 13 Community Book Club - 10:30am via Zoom - Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel - No commitment required.  You don’t even have to have read the book to go to the meetings, but you may come out of the discussion wanting to read it.  Sponsored jointly by the COA and the Gleason Public Library. Monday, September 13 Introduction to Mah Jongg - Weekly 2:30-4:00pm Town Hall - Mah Jongg is an exciting four-player tile game with Chinese origins. Using 152 tiles depicting Chinese characters and symbols, players pick and discard in turn to form combinations found on the National Mah Jongg League’s annual card of hands. It is a game of strategy, luck and skill, which offers many of the same cognitive benefits as chess and bridge.  Lessons are free for Carlisle seniors, but you will need to purchase a 2021 Mah Jongg card ($9) through the National Mah Jongg League after the first class. Tuesday, September 14 FDR Presidential Library Tour - 1:00pm via Zoom - A virtual look into the more than 17 million pages of primary source material maintained at the Roosevelt Presidential Library (the nation’s first Presidential Library), will provide a brief history of the Presidential Library System in general, and the Roosevelt Presidential Library specifically, shedding light on the lives of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the Great Depression, and World War II. Tuesday, September 14 Virtual Poetry - 7:00pm via Zoom - Sponsored by the Concord and Maynard Public Libraries - In her fourth full-length book White Blood: A Lyric of Virginia, Rilke-Prize-winning poet Kiki Petrosino turns her gaze to Virginia, where she digs into her genealogical and intellectual roots, while contemplating the knotty legacies of slavery and discrimination in the Upper South. Friday, September 17 Parkinson's Disease and Vision - 1:00pm via Zoom - Sponsored by Emerson Hospital - Nicole Kelly, MS, OTR/L will discuss changes in vision that can impact participation in daily activities. Monday, September 20 Haircuts on the Go - By Appointment Fire Station - Hair stylists Suzanne Hickey & Georgia Triantafilles provide haircuts to seniors. Fee: $12 for a cut (plus a tip if you wish). All are expected to wear a mask. Call the COA 978-371-2895 for your appointment and more details.
 
Wednesday, September 22 Roasted Peppers & Honey Pot Hill Orchard - 11:00am van departs Congregational Church; returning around 4:30pm - Have a quick bite at Roasted Peppers in Maynard, followed by hot cider, crisp juicy apples, and sugary cider doughnuts at Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow. Van fee $5 payable to driver on the day of the trip. Only 12 seats available. First come, first served. Carlisle residents have 1st preference. Register by Wednesday, September 15th by calling the COA.
