Getting to know LCC’s Dean of Military Chaplains

Q: What is unique about LCC military chaplains (confessional Lutheran military chaplains)?

A: Perhaps the most unique aspect of LCC Military Chaplains is our ability to understand our troops as sinful human beings who are loved by God and redeemed by Jesus Christ. Our understanding of the need to properly distinguish Law and Gospel places us all in the same situation/condition—“miserable sinners in dire need of forgiveness.” We know sin in its worst forms, and we know the pure grace of God in Jesus Christ. This means that for LCC Chaplains, no sin surprises us, and no sinner is beyond loving or saving under the grace and mercy of Jesus. This comes as a surprise to many soldiers who have bought into the secular myth that “religious people” see themselves as better or superior to “mere sinners.” It also allows us to have a realistic and relevant worldview regarding the sin and brokenness of mankind that has caused the war-torn situations in which our troops find themselves.

PRAYERS

Please also remember in prayer the people of Haiti:
Lord of all creation, You are our refuge in times of trouble.  We implore You to be with our brothers and sisters in Haiti who are dealing with the aftermath of this deadly earthquake.  Provide the comfort and peace that only You can bring during this time.  Console the hearts of those who mourn and ease the suffering of those injured.  Bless the relief efforts of the first responders and the agencies on the ground providing food, shelter and care.  And bolster the resolve of governments and those with means to assist with the recovery.  We also pray, Lord, that You strengthen the faith of Your people during this difficult time that they may trust that though the mountains leave their place and the hills be tossed to the ground Your love shall never leave us and Your promise of salvation in Christ Jesus shall never be shaken.  All these things and whatever else You know they need, grant them, Lord, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.  Amen

How Do You Inherit

“And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’”  - Luke 10:25

That’s just not a good question! Doing and inheriting just don’t go together. What can you do to inherit the English throne? Nothing. Inheriting is about birth right; doing is about merit. We receive eternal life by birth right in our Baptism into Christ. All of our doing in the Kingdom of God flows from who we are by our new birth. It can never be the other way around.

Since by God’s grace, we have already been given the greatest inheritance we will ever receive, we are free to reflect God’s grace in everything we do on this earth. That includes stewarding our material blessings in service to our family, our church, and our neighbour, in a way the honours God. An end-of-life gift is your last opportunity to practice this stewardship. If you would like more information on creating a charitable gift in your Will, please contact Lutheran Foundation Canada or visit us at www.lutheranfoundation.ca.

How should an executor be compensated? Although it does occur, it has not been common to include a dollar amount for executor compensation in a Will. If no amount is stated in a Will, an executor can request compensation. Some provinces in Canada have legislation that sets out how to calculate executor's compensation. Where there is no legislation, one must rely on statutes that simply say that executors are entitled to fair and reasonable compensation. This of course creates a challenge as people rarely agree on what is fair and reasonable. Where there is a set formula, the amount allowable comes to 5%. Where there is no schedule, the normal rate of remuneration is between 1% and 5% depending on various factors such as difficulty, time spent, and whether any extraordinary steps had to be taken. If you are named as an executor, these items should be taken into consideration when asking for compensation: estate dollar value, number of beneficiaries, number and type of assets, and complexity of tax issue. If it is an average estate with no big issues, consider compensation less than the maximum allowable.

Our Merciful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Does All Things Well

The Lord proclaims the Gospel “to those who have an anxious heart” to comfort and encourage them with His presence. He comes not only with threats of “vengeance” and “recompense,” but with His gracious salvation (Is. 35:4). He opens “the eyes of the blind” and “the ears of the deaf,” and He loosens “the tongue of the mute” to “sing for joy” (Is. 35:5–6). Like water on thirsty ground, He speaks His life-giving Word to people of all nations. With His Word and the touch of His hand, He does “all things well,” so that you may now speak “plainly” (Mark 7:31–37). You confess the truth of God in Christ to the glory of His holy name, and you call upon His name in every trouble, confident that He will hear and answer. As you pray and confess with your tongue, so also “love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8). Show your faith “in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory,” by loving without partiality. For God has “chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom” (James 2:1–5).
