Book Discussion Group moves to Tuesday nights at 7:00pm

The Book Discussion Group, which had been meeting on zoom on Monday nights, is moving to Tuesdays at 7:00pm beginning September 14. We are reading Anne Lamott’s Traveling Mercies.

As noted in Goodreads:
Despite—or because of—her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. . . . Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God, and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers." At once tough, personal, affectionate, wise, and very funny, Traveling Mercies tells in exuberant detail how Anne Lamott learned to shine the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life, exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope.
This week at the constructions site:

FENCING
A perimeter fence was installed this week to protect the construction zone. A few of you have asked about the location of the retaining wall along the uphill side of the church. Please note: the temporary fence does not represent the location of the retaining wall. The work on the driveway, retaining wall, and utilities will take a couple of months to complete once actual work begins.

PARKING
Parking access to the upper lot will only be available to Mt. Carmel on an as needed basis, and with advance notice to the construction manager. SLO United Methodist Church has given us permission to park in their lot until they return to in-person worship. Parking needs will be evaluated each week to ensure we continue to provide a welcoming atmosphere each Sunday.

We will continue to provide as much information as possible about the changes happening around us. Please contact John Cook or MaryAnn Jakes if you have any questions.

More pictures will be available next week.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

The new donation site is up and running. Please click the link below for more information.

Link to Mt. Carmel matching funds page

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!

SOUTHWEST SYNOD

Invitation to the Installation of Bishop Brenda Bos

You are invited to the Installation of The Rev. Brenda Bos as Bishop of the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

This celebration of our faith, community, Lutheran expression and future possibilities will take place in-person at the historic Angelica Lutheran Church in Los Angeles and with the participation of attendees at satellite locations at churches throughout the synod territory. We will be celebrating the immigrant experience in the United States through word and art.

Angelica Lutheran Church was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1888 and served as the seat of the Los Angeles District of the Augustana Synod. The present Gothic-style church building was completed in 1925 on a campus that grew to include an auditorium, a social hall, Sunday School facilities, Angelica Homes (a residential community for seniors), and the offices of what became the Southwest California Synod. Now a congregation that serves a primarily Spanish-speaking population, Angelica is a witness to a changing and ethnically diverse Los Angeles, rooted in and strengthened by the witness, labor, faith, and hope of an immigrant body of Christ.

The Rev. Brenda Bos was elected to serve a six-year term as Bishop of the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America on June 5, 2021 during the 33rd Assembly of the Southwest California Synod. You can read more about Bishop-elect Brenda here.

For the safety of the community and of individual participants, attendance at Angelica Lutheran will be limited, although we will make every effort to include as many people as possible. If you wish to attend in person, please use the link below to make a reservation as soon as possible. Watch for information about satellite locations for the Installation in your inbox and at the synod website soon.
