Dear Rotarians and Friends,

At our Board meeting this month, we have made the difficult decision to defer the Raffles to next year.  The decision was not made lightly.  Just as restrictions are being eased, we will have to secure prizes from businesses that may have been impacted by COVID.  We will then have to sell Raffles tickets over several weekends whilst some restrictions are still in place as we approach Christmas.  This did not sound like an ideal scenario to me.  We value our member’s mental health and safety and prefer that members enjoy their “freedom” after such an extended lockdown period.  We hope to undertake the Raffles when some normality resumes next year, and we can add a membership drive to the Raffles element.

John Palmer has offered to revive the Christmas pudding from Puddling Lane as a Club fund raiser activity this year.  He will revert soon with details of ordering and pricing.  Please do support this initiative in place of the Raffles that is not taking place and spread this message to your network of family and friends.

Speaker Hon Jim Lloyd gave a personal and heartfelt experience of his journey as a survivor of prostate cancer.  This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) which is the peak national body for prostate cancer.  The Foundation was started by Roger Climpson AM and a member of Rotary Lane Cove.  What a nice legacy for our Club to have and we should be very proud of this achievement.  Prostate cancer needs to be spoken about as it is the second most cancer affecting our male population after skin cancer.   A couple of our members have sat on the Board of PCFA and John Palmer is still active on the Board since its inception in 1996.  What an achievement.

We have had a strong focus on sustainability issues in our weekly topics as I feel sustainability has become the movement of our time.  Let’s embrace it and see how we as a Club can get more involved.  Dr Judy Friedlander, founder and CEO of Planting Seeds is an organization that protects biodiversity in urban environments.  Many insects, birds, bees and some flora and fauna has becoming “extinct” in our modern urban settings.  Planting Seeds offers some solutions to reviving some endangered species through schools and community involvement.  Craig as Director of Club Projects has reached out to Dr Friedlander to undertake a Lane Cove community-based project that can be spearheaded by our Club enhancing our visibility in the local community.

We are submitting a proposal for financial assistance to Lane Cove Council due to loss of Fair income and many thanks to Treasurer Tania Mace who has put in the hard yards again.  Tania has also pursued a random act of kindness and delivered a box of scones by Bern the Chef from the Club to the Ambulance service personnel at Artarmon which was very much appreciated.

Brian and Satish are working hard on the Balwyn Centenary Grants for our regional projects and thank them for their hard work on these submissions.

Thanks to Adrienne’s resourcefulness we have received some publicity in the September issue of TVO showcasing our Club as diverse club with different ethnicity and age group.  Please do have a look.  I attach the link here for the digital version.

Our thoughts are also with member Dick Dawes as he recuperates at RNSH and we wish him a speedy recovery.  Till then, keep safe.
